Castel Sant'Angelo fu originariamente costruito come una tomba monumentale per l'imperatore Adriano. Già durante il tardo impero romano divenne una roccaforte per le sue dimensioni e posizione strategica a nord della città, da dove proveniva la maggior parte delle invasioni. Fu poi trasformato in inespugnabile fortezza papale durante il Medioevo e migliorato per tutto il periodo rinascimentale, con una grande guarnigione, carceri e appartamenti papali. Questo castello è direttamente collegato al Vaticano per mezzo di un passaggio coperto chiamato "Passetto di Borgo". Il papa avrebbe usato questa porta per rifugiarsi nel castello. Gli appartamenti papali sono stati appositamente progettati per rendere confortevole il papa durante il suo potenziale soggiorno nella fortezza. La varietà di scopi e la sua continuità d'uso nel corso dei secoli rende il Castello di Sant'Angelo uno dei monumenti più affascinanti e iconici della Città Eterna. Our guide, Fe was incredible! She was so full of energy, fun and passion for Castel Sant Angelo it was infectious. You could not but help being swept up in Fe's enthusiasm - she really brought Castel Sant Angelo to life. I wish I could give Fe 10 stars!
Sooo many steps. Navigating the steps wasn’t easy sometimes there are no rails. But worth the eggort

Castel Sant’Angelo is a gem in Rome. Definitely an amazing visit after the Vatican, helps discovering fascinating stories of popes, artists and noble families. Amazing and caring staff and tour company!
Castel Sant’Angelo was such a fascinating place to explore, full of history, hidden passages, and incredible views over Rome from the top. Our guide shared brilliant stories about its past as a fortress, prison, and papal refuge, which really brought the castle to life. The mix of history and breathtaking scenery made this visit one of the highlights of our trip highly recommended! If you are visiting the Vatican one morning, I would pair it with a late afternoon tour (we did 1630) - if your feet can take it.
The Castel Sant'Angelo tour was absolutely captivating. From crossing the angel-lined Ponte Sant’Angelo to exploring the castle’s hidden chambers and papal apartments, every moment felt like stepping back in time. Our guide was fantastic—knowledgeable, engaging, and full of stories that brought centuries of Roman history to life. The rooftop views overlooking the Tiber River and St. Peter’s Basilica were breathtaking. It’s incredible to think this structure evolved from a mausoleum to a fortress, prison, and papal refuge. This tour is a must for anyone who loves history, architecture, or simply wants to experience one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks in depth.
We had an outstanding time touring Castel Sant’Angelo with Alec as our tour guide! Tickets were easily purchased, would found our guide easily and all expectations were met/exceeded. Alec provided a fun and informative experience while answering all of our inquiries! He was knowledgeable in all things related to the site, its role in history, the significance of details found throughout … and so much more! We had Oleg as our tour guide he is incredibly well informed and indeed hilarious. The tour was great and at the end you get at the top of the castle with the most amazing panoramic view of Rome. I’d definitely do it again in the future!
