Amazing, varied, excellent guide

Having had a great tour with Red Dune Safaris in January 2026, we were keen for more. We chose a private full-day "Treasures of the Namib". We knew that the trip didn’t include lunch (although there were places en route where we could have bought lunch), so we brought food from the cruise ship. Our guide this time was Delano, a one-time long-distance truck driver, and now a guide, historian, farmer, hunter, and conservationist. He met us right at the cruise ship arrival area. His first concern was to make sure that the trip included exactly what we wanted. After discussion we decided to leave out Dune 7. The tar road drive north out of Walvis Bay and into the Namib Desert was a revelation. We were driving along an African economic artery. About once a minute, a 22-wheeler carrying flat copper ingots from Zambian refineries headed south for export. Meanwhile, we passed low-loaders hauling heavy mining equipment (landed at Walvis Bay) heading north. The bleak desert landscape will be familiar to anyone who’s seen the “Mad Max” movies. Eventually we reached the dry bed of the Swakop River. Here we left the dual carriageway, and our road changed to single-track, then gravel, and then ruts, and then we started driving through a rugged desert moonscape. The trails writhed around spiky black hills: a mixture of granites, injected basalt dykes and sills, and intensely folded metamorphics, with broad sand valleys between. We saw: • unusual ancient plants - the Welwitschia (both male and female), hundreds of years old • rocks with strangely polished tops. We speculated that in pre-desert times, maybe elephants and giraffes used them as scratching posts? • and a musical basalt slab! Then on to the mouth of the Swakop: the city of Swakopmund. This is a former German colonial town, with streets wide enough to turn an ox-wagon, and many Bavarian-looking buildings. We spent ages in the packed-to-the-gills town museum. Next was the Crystal Gallery, a private gem museum containing the world’s largest crystal specimen (quartz of course). There we also saw displays of the rainbow rock Pietersite (only found in Namibia) and flamboyant Chrysocolla - but even tiny samples of these were way beyond our budget. There were many other interesting markets, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Finally we drove between the dunes and the sea, back to Walvis Bay. A really full and varied day with an excellent guide.

A day full of unforgettable moments with Red Dune Safaris – highly recommended!

Our full-day tour “Photo Safari: Wildlife and Landscape” with Red Dune Safaris was an absolute highlight of our second day of cruise stay in Namibia from the first to the last moment and exceeded all expectations. From professional organization to personal attention – every detail was lovingly and perfectly designed. Our guide JP Koch convinced not only with his exceptional friendliness and attention, but also inspired with a deep expertise about the fascinating landscape, the unique wildlife and the impressive geology of the region. This created a very friendly atmosphere in which we felt in good hands at all times. Wildlife observations at Namib Naukluft Park were great: Springboks, ostriches, ground squirrels and even vultures presented themselves in their natural environment and made us feel the living heart of Namibia up close. The impressive landscapes – from the rocky massifs and mountains to dry valleys and seasonal river systems – looked like a picture book and left lasting memories. Especially the moment when we were allowed to experience the seemingly endless vastness of the barren gravel and rock desert was magical and will accompany us for a long time to come. Red Dune Safaris also set standards in terms of organization: The punctual pick-up, the smooth running, the well-placed breaks and numerous lovingly arranged extras made this day an all-round perfect experience. Those who travel Namibia and are looking for a tour that combines spectacular wildlife encounters with breathtaking nature will find Red Dune Safaris the absolute premium address. It is with great enthusiasm that we award this extraordinary company the full score – 5 out of 5 stars – and make an unqualified recommendation. A big thank you to JP Koch for these unforgettable experiences that have enriched our trip and made it unique!

Extremely above the expetations

Everybody going around Namibia with a 4x4 can find a beautiful landscape rich of wildlife and flora, but it's when you book a guided tour that you want to be genuinely impressed. JP made the day of the tour awesome, his knowledge of the Namibian environment and his passion (and patience ;) ) for touring/climbing the dunes, made the overall experience extremely above the expectations.

Safari through the wild nature

The Wildlife Photography Tour is really awesome. During the first part of the Tour you gonna spot the wild animals. We spotted Zebras, Oryx, Giraffes, Springboks, Warthogs, Surikate and Ostrich. JP has a lot of knowledge about the area and the animals. Everywhere stopping was possible to take pics or just enjoy the nature. During the Tour several drinks are on board and for lunch very tasty food was prepared by JP's wife. The second part of the day trip takes us through different typical Namibian landscapes which are beautiful with the different colors and styles. Thanks for making this day an unforgettable adventure and experience. Johannes

Full Day Wildlife Photography and Sandwich Harbour Tour

We did the Full Day Wildlife Photography as well as the Sandwich Harbour Tour. Both days it was only us and JP which was great because he would stop whereever we wanted and we were not in a big group. On the Wildlife Photography Tour we saw lots of animals such as oryx, ostriches, giraffes, warthogs, zebras etc. The lunch was also nice (homemade by his wife). The big sand dunes on the Sandwich Harbour Tour were impressive. I would highly recommend both tours especially if you don’t have many days in Namibia. You will definitely get a good view of the country!

Perfect wildlife day trip

We had a perfect, really impressive day in the national park! We saw different antelopes, may ostriches, a family of warthogs, vultures, zebras and even a giraffe. This was an amazing experience which we will never forget! Apart from that, we also saw an amazing landscape and had a really really nice lunch in the desert. Thanks to our guide, we also learned a lot about the animals, the landscape and the country. We really enjoyed the time and the time was passing by so quickly! I would recommend that amazing trip to everyone who is in that region! Many many thanks again to our guide JP for that unforgettable experience! :)
