Picked up just in time and taken to the queue for boarding. From the island everyone goes in separate buses and that is the group for the rest of the tour. Ex-con has given the tour of the prison and from the bus an English speaking guide about the island. Returning for boarding was very messy. Have queued at 3 ferries to eventually come with delay. Because of this the guide who had brought us to the ferry also not seen again on return. All in all, no matter who you book. It's just pick-up and drop-off. The rest are with the crowd.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. We're pleased to hear that your pickup and transfer to the ferry terminal went smoothly. We're sorry to hear that the return boarding process felt disorganized. Unfortunately, the ferry boarding and return operations are managed by Robben Island Museum, and during busy periods delays and queue changes can occur. Regarding our guide, we'd just like to clarify that he remained available throughout the experience. As we understood it, you mentioned that you would not require assistance on your return. He even saw you while you were arranging the helicopter tour at the agreed meeting point where you were expected to reconnect. Thank you again for your comments. We truly value your feedback and are glad you had the opportunity to experience this important historic site.
Robben Island tours remind us of the dark days of apartheid. As such it is a must see for anyone visiting Cape Town. The tour provides an informative and objective briefing, which is both inspiring and entertaining.
I'ts a detailed, exceptional experience that all SA citizens should experience. Would definitely recommend

I strongly recommend the tour
Thank you for your kind review! We’re glad you enjoyed the tour and truly appreciate your recommendation. We hope to welcome you again on another experience in Cape Town soon!
Robben Island is a truly meaningful experience. The tour is well organized, and hearing the stories directly from former political prisoners makes the visit incredibly powerful. Walking through the prison and seeing Nelson Mandela’s cell brings South Africa’s history to life in a way that books simply cannot. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Cape Town.
Thank you for your wonderful review. We’re delighted to hear that you found the experience meaningful and well organized. The stories shared by former political prisoners truly make the history of Robben Island come alive. We appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you again on another memorable experience in Cape Town.
Great experience, personal testimonials made it very real and impactful. Both the tour bus tour guide and the prison guide were wonderfully engaging.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that the personal testimonials made the experience real and impactful for you. The former prisoners and guides truly bring the history of Robben Island to life. We appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you again on another memorable tour.
Unfortunately, we were disappointed with our tour of Robben Island and the prison. On arrival, we were escorted directly onto buses which, quite frankly, did not appear fit to be on the road. While the island tour itself was enjoyable, the experience was uncomfortable at times. Our guide, a former prisoner, repeatedly removed his shirt to show scars from his time in the prison and asked an elderly woman in the group to stand and share her own painful experiences, referring to her as “Mama.” This felt inappropriate and unsettling. The experience did not improve during the prison tour. The second guide focused heavily on graphic descriptions of torture and the horrors that took place there, which became overwhelming rather than informative. Our main concern was the lack of personal time on the island. Visitors are required to follow a tightly controlled schedule, with no opportunity to explore independently. After both the island bus tour and the prison tour, we were allowed only around 30 seconds at Nelson Mandela’s cell. As a result, the day felt long, rushed, and emotionally exhausting
Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re sorry to hear that certain aspects of the experience did not meet your expectations, although we appreciate your acknowledgement of the historical importance of Robben Island. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Robben Island is managed and guided entirely by the Robben Island Museum and the relevant heritage authorities. All guides, vehicles, schedules, and tour formats are closely regulated to preserve the site’s integrity and to ensure that its powerful history is presented respectfully and responsibly. The former political prisoners who guide these tours share deeply personal experiences that are often emotional and moving. While this can be intense at times, it forms an important part of preserving the authenticity and lived history of the site. The structured timing and limited access to certain areas, including Nelson Mandela’s cell, are necessary to manage visitor numbers and protect this important heritage location. We truly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us continue improving communication and setting clearer expectations for future guests. Thank you again for visiting Robben Island and for sharing your perspective.
From booking to picking up the tour everything perfect. Even for a poor English speaker everything perfect.
Robben Island itself is absolutely worth visiting. The island has real historical weight, and the prison tour was informative and well delivered by a former political prisoner. That part of the experience fully lived up to expectations. The pickup and drop-off were handled by Faisal, who was punctual, friendly, and professional throughout. Transport logistics worked smoothly. However, it’s important to be very clear about what you are actually paying for when booking this through Viator via Cape Oasis. Cape Oasis is not the official tour operator and has no involvement in the Robben Island Museum tour itself. The ferry, island visit, bus tour (40 people), and prison tour are exactly the same standard experience you get by booking directly with the Robben Island Museum. Tickets purchased directly from the museum cost 600 ZAR per person. Those of us who booked through Cape Oasis paid nearly three times that price, yet were placed on the same large bus with guests who had paid the standard rate. There was no small-group experience, no specialized access, and no enhanced guiding — despite the implication that this was something more premium. Cape Oasis simply adds a very significant markup for a pickup and drop-off service. For context, an Uber to the CBD ferry terminal costs around $5. This became clear once on the island, and there were many visibly unhappy customers who realized they had paid a premium for no added value. While the destination and official museum tour are excellent, the way this experience is marketed through Viator/Cape Oasis is misleading and feels like a complete rip-off. This is something Viator should review carefully, as the pricing and positioning do not align with what is actually delivered.
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and honest review. We truly appreciate your acknowledgment of the historical importance of Robben Island, the quality of the official museum tour, and Faisal’s professionalism and punctuality. We will be sure to pass your kind words on to him. We also take your concerns very seriously and would like to clarify a few important points for future travelers. Cape Oasis Travel & Tours is indeed not the Robben Island Museum, and we do not operate the island, ferry, bus, or prison tour itself. As clearly stated in our Viator listing, we act as a logistics and facilitation service, offering: Advance ferry ticket procurement (often during high-demand or sold-out periods) Coordinated hotel pickup and drop-off Time management and guidance for first-time visitors On-the-ground assistance before and after the ferry experience The Robben Island Museum operates only one standardized tour format for all visitors. The small group, private, or premium prison tours are only available on a special request, and we do arrange that when requested. We understand that this can be disappointing if expectations differ, and we acknowledge that this should be communicated even more clearly. Regarding pricing: our rates reflect not only transport, but also operational costs, ticket sourcing, staff time, administration, fuel, waiting time, and the risk involved in securing tickets on behalf of clients, particularly during peak seasons when tickets are scarce or unavailable directly from the museum. That said, we fully respect that this service may not feel like good value for travelers who are comfortable navigating logistics independently. Your feedback on how this experience is positioned is extremely valuable. We are genuinely sorry that this experience did not meet your expectations, and we appreciate you raising these points constructively. Honest reviews like yours help us improve and serve future guests better. Thank you again for visiting Cape Town and Robben Island, and we wish you safe and meaningful travels ahead.
Thank you very much for this memorable day A big thank you to the driver who picked us up and brought us back. It was a very touching experience especially with our guide who was a former prisoner.
