This experience was about much more than just eating. We explored hidden corners of the city and learned stories behind the food and traditions. Each tasting was carefully chosen and delicious. The relaxed pace allowed us to enjoy every moment without feeling rushed. It was a memorable and enriching way to spend an evening in Mexico City.
More booze than food if we are honest. We are glad you enjoyed it.
We had a wonderful evening filled with great food, drinks, and interesting stories. The guide was friendly and made everyone feel comfortable. We tasted a variety of dishes that showed different sides of Mexican cuisine. Everything was well organized, and the pacing was just right. It felt like discovering the city through food with someone who truly loves and understands it.
We work with Chefs. not guides but we are glad you enjoyed it.
This food tour was an excellent way to experience Mexico City beyond the usual tourist spots. We visited small, local places that we never would have found on our own. The guide explained the food culture clearly and made the experience fun and interactive. Every stop offered something unique and delicious. The group size was perfect, and the overall experience felt relaxed and authentic. Highly recommended for food lovers.
I am glad you enjoyed the food, but this is more of a booze tour than a food tour.
Great food, beer, Mezcale and tequila drink in places that were unexpected. Let's have some enchilades in a pet supply support, why not? We were staying about 20 minutes away an returned to every spot on this tour. I love being guided by a man and his dog. Chef Karl is smart, funny and has the best stories. Do not miss this tour.
Thank you so much.
Karl’s Mexico Food Tour - Would have been funny is not so expensive. I sought out a 'chef guided tour' because I am 'a foodie' with a better than average knowledge of ingredients, technique and history. I thought if I hired a chef I would be able to elevate my experience and cut through the tourist BS and get a really authentic informed experience. This was not the case. We booked both Night the Mexico City Confidential Food Tour and the Daytime Street Food tour months before our trip. The website was not functioning properly so we could not purchase tickets through the site and we ended up having to wire money to pay for our tours. This should have been an indication of what to expect. Our guide was Karl. He was prompt, well kempt and spoke Spanish well enough to navigate the tours smoothly. He brought a cute little dog on the tour... The dog turned out to be the highlight. Daytime Street Food Tour: Karl has really limited knowledge of Mexican food, and I question if he is a Chef at all. He didn't know the names of basic Mexico City street food staples, like El Pastor, Huaraches, and Huitlacoche. His vendor / dish selections were seemingly random and seemed to be based on geography rather than quality. The Chilaquiles were our first stop and the best thing he provided us during both tours. After that, it was just random stops with random quality eats. I love fine dining but have a special place in my heart for street food and I was very excited to explore one of the best food cities in the word.... I wanted to experience food that I might not find on my own, but instead we were taken on a tour of randomly selected spots. While most sports were good, nothing was mind blowing. One stop for Taquitos was inedible, the taquito was filled with low quality pressed ham and cheese, it was disgusting. Karl's running narrative while walking around was erroneous, ridiculous, fatuous and bordered on compulsive lying. Overall a waste of money, time and a great disappointment. The nighttime tour was a series of drinks with almost no food. Nothing about the night tour was special. Karl picked a few spots around the perimeter of a park and we just walked in a big circle drinking shots of well-mezcal or beer... For the amount we paid for the tour it was disappointing. His insights were ill informed and inaccurate. Tip for Karl: take someone else's food tour and copy their stops. If you just want someone to translate- Karl is an option, if you want to discover hidden gems… keep on walking.
We’re sorry this experience did not align with your expectations. Our tours are designed to reflect the everyday, local food culture of Mexico City rather than a fine-dining or academic culinary framework, and we understand that approach may not suit every traveler. We appreciate the acknowledgment of Karl’s professionalism and organization, and we stand by our guides’ role as cultural hosts rather than culinary lecturers. For guests seeking an informal, neighborhood-based exploration of how locals eat and drink, our tours continue to offer an honest and grounded experience.
Confidential Indeed. Our final stop made the entire tour worthwhile. A bar we never would have found on our own. This is not a street food tour; it is a mysterious night tour of wonderful locations led by a charming and funny host, along with Milou.
Thank you so much, and yes it is more drinking than eating.
Karl Wilder and The Chef Tours have done it again. I love food tours, and we chose this one for our team building week in Mexico City. We could not have made a better choice. This tour offers more alcohol than most tours, and that is what we needed to end our week of work. Milou, the company mascot, joined us and was as entertaining as our primary host. At each stop, he would jump on Chef Karl's lap, nap and be ready for the next stop. I don't want to give too much away, but I will never look at Guacamole or burritos in the same way. AND Mexican wine, who knew how good it could be. This was a tour, but it never felt like one. It felt like an old friend showing his secret favourite places in Mexico. Chef Karl created food tours for Secret Food Tours and Eating Europe, and his experience shows. With only 6 guests, I suggest booking far ahead of time to prevent seeing the sold out button.
Thank you so much!
