La costruzione del complesso del tempio iniziò intorno al 1264 a.C. e durò per circa 20 anni, fino al 1244 a.C. Conosciuto come il "Tempio di Ramesse, amato da Amon", fu uno dei sei templi rupestri eretti in Nubia durante il lungo regno di Ramesse II. Il loro scopo era quello di impressionare i vicini meridionali dell'Egitto e anche di rafforzare lo status della religione egiziana nella regione. Si ritiene che l'asse del tempio sia stato posizionato dagli antichi architetti egiziani in modo tale che il 22 ottobre e il 22 febbraio i raggi del sole penetrassero nel santuario e illuminassero le sculture sulla parete di fondo, ad eccezione della statua di Ptah, un dio collegato agli Inferi, che rimase sempre nell'oscurità. La gente si riunisce ad Abu Simbel per assistere a questo straordinario spettacolo, il 21 ottobre e il 21 febbraio
