Achi is a compassionate person. He is passionate about conserving the rainforest and participates in a conservation organization to protect land on his own time. He is intelligent, patient, curious. We walked slowly as he scanned every tree for lizards, birds, snakes, bugs, and moneys. We saw kangaroo lizards, bulb nosed lizards, green lizards, babblers, drongos, purple faced leaf monkeys, wood spiders, green pit vipers, millipedes, leeches, cicadas, and butterflies. I reached out to Achi on WhatsApp to book this directly through him, which was a good choice. naturetrails.lk
We went to sinharaja rain forest with Italian family with guide for 3 hours amazing tracking but good full day tracking 👍
To people reading this, you'll do yourself a favour by booking your tours with Achi, or at least someone recommended by him. There are guides out there with no credentials other than being a local, whereas Achi has actual education in biology. He also does NGO work to preserve and grow Sinharaja forest area. You can feel Achi's passion for Sinharaja and nature in general, which made the tours even more enjoyable for us. Achi has great English, and is knowledgeable not only about flora and fauna, but also about local culture and history, which added depth to many topics related to Sinharaja. Achi was also responsible in adjusting the tours according to our interests, and as such we feel we got the best possible experience. We took two full-day tours with Achi, from both Pitadeniya and Kurulugala entrances. The animal species we saw on the tours were too numerous to mention, but highlights included a rare white variant of purple-faced langur, green pit vipers, a giant earthworm (length of my arm!) and an exquisite white paraside fly catcher. Other sights included beautiful waterfalls, clean natural pools, liana-covered paths and impressive rock faces. As such, there were great locations for tasty lunches (which Achi's mom had prepared for us) and refreshing dips in stream waters. Thank you so much Achi! Next time we hope to do also the night tour which we unfortunately missed. <3
It was amazing we were with us two and it was fantastic so much beautiful nature and animals. The guide was the best he knew the forest so good and spots the animals like no other. You wont regret it! 10/10
The tour time is from 8 am to about 3 or 4 pm, the whole journey is 7 or 8 kilometers. In the morning, the leader came to pick us up in a tuktuk car. After passing a small village, we entered the tropical rainforest, which is the forest reserve. We were all amazed at the leader's good eyesight. He helped us find many small animals along the way. We saw the frog-mouthed nighthawk and fiddle-headed lizard, which are unique to Sri Lanka, for the first time. There was even a huge lizard blocking our way and sleeping in the middle of the road. By the way, there are leeches. Before participating in this activity, I was a little worried. I was a little afraid that leeches would crawl on my body and suck blood. But in the end, I found that the worry was unnecessary. Before entering the forest, the leader helped us make some anti-leech preparations, such as tying long socks around the trouser legs and applying anti-leech soap on the shoes. I was not bitten throughout the whole journey. Finally, I am very grateful to the leader for his enthusiastic and patient explanation. We learned a lot about animals and plants. I was very happy to enjoy the lunch prepared by the leader by the waterfall. This is a very memorable experience.
Since we were in Sri Lanka for the first time, we wanted to take the opportunity to visit a rainforest. We stayed in Galle, which was quite a few hours drive from the rainforest, but after all, it was totally worth it. We got up early and arrived at the meeting place after a few hours. There we were immediately introduced to our sympathetic guide (who was a biologist). Equipment was handed to us to start the trek safely. (Socks against leeches, packed lunch...) We started the hike and were amazed under job each time by the knowledge of our guide and the beautiful fauna and flora of this rainforest. We saw endemic reptiles, birds, monkeys, insects, plants etc. In the afternoon we took our delicious lunch, prepared by his wife, at a beautiful waterfall, and once our bellies were well filled, we could also seek refreshment in the water while the monkeys were playing in the trees around us. We have only good memories of this trip. Highly recommended!
We went out with Achi’s father who was very well, he knows all the surrounding species perfectly and has a lynx eye to find the animals hidden in the forest. However, the tour in the jungle lasts about 5 hours and no possibility to lengthen it. We were offered a walk in a village but it was clearly not the same... In conclusion we recommend the jungle trip but not the full day (the price is more expensive and the time in the jungle is the same as the half day tour)
It was a wonderful experience of Sinharaja Rainforest. The guide was very good and helpful. He guided tour with beautiful vistas, informations on the flora and fauna. If you wanna get an amazing experience Achi is the best guide.
Lucky enough, as a VSO Volunteer, working in tea estates, nearby, to get to know the family well. No one knows, and understands and appreciates the forest better than they. My time was twenty years ago, for four amazing years. Not entirely comfortable with reptiles...and leeches...but no one handled encounters for me, better. I cannot speak hihghly enough for their knowledge, committment, and work. Outstanding Achintha, the new generation, was afine youngster, and, I know, has grown into the family tradition. None, know Sinharajah better.
We spent a beautiful morning with our guide Achi. A very relaxing tour with lots of things to see. Achi is such a great guide and very knowledgeable. Many thanks!
Thank you very much for your kind feedback.
