My family and I took a tour of the abalone farm on May 27, 2026. Our tour guide, Karen, was charming, friendly and very informative about the farm, the abalone, and about the various other sea animals and seaweed in the area. It was a wonderful hands on experience, and we learned a lot. Tasting sea grapes with ponzu sauce was fun, as was tasting some of the seaweed and, of course, cooked abalone. I highly recommend this tour!
Thank you for your coming and so glad to hear that you had a fun time with Karen during a tour. We share our knowledge with visitors without hesitation as it is worthwhile for us to let people know about environmental challenges on abalone. Mahalo!
This was such a pleasant surprise. So informative and educational! Getting to hold and taste the abalone was a delight. Busy the food truck after for an extra experience!
Thank you for your coming and glad to hear that our educational tour surprised you positively! You had abalone meal at the food truck that is awesome! We are currently suspending food truck service due to an operational challenge but would let you know once it is resumed. Mahalo!
We were pleasantly surprised by all that we learned today. Carlos did an excellent job reading the crowd, answering questions and sharing his knowledge. We enjoyed the interactive tour and were intrigued by the samplings offered. At the end of the tour we headed to the food truck for some beer and steamed abalone with sea grapes. Yum!!!

All about abalone and the abalone farm. Very knowledgeable tour guide. Got to hold them and feel them clasping your finger. Tasted some of the seaweed they eat, really good. Got to taste the cooked abalone, it was good. Very different and interesting.

The tour was very informative and interesting. Carlos our guide was patient and answered questions as they came up. We were allowed to have some hands on experience with the abalone. The tasting at the end was great and surprisingly delicious and tender.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Big Island Abalone tour. The tour guide did an excellent job mixing facts with humor and including hands-on learning. The tour ends with some delicious samples!
Thank you for your visit and glad to hear that you guys enjoyed 60 min educational farm tour! Abalone is not a daily food and not so popular here in the US, so it is exciting that we tell you a lifecycle of abalone, globally well-known as delicacy. Hope to see you again! Mahalo!
I was really looking forward to the abalone tour and it did not disappoint! Karen is so kind and passionate about sharing her knowledge about the farm! It was a wonderful way to start our trip as all of the staff were friendly and welcoming! Highly recommend😊
Thank you for your coming and apology for my late response. Karen must be relieved to see your comment! We designed the farm tour for everyone from 3yrs kids to seniors, so perfect match to the family! Educational tour we offer is giving you everything we know, so you can be the master of abalone within 60 min! Mahalo!
Perfect length tour, in depth and more than just Abalone! There is minimal walking and most is shaded.
Thank you for your coming and glad to hear that you enjoyed 60 min educational farm tour with small tasting. Yes, we designed a farm tour for all generation and 75% of the total tour time is conducted under the shade. Please try our food service next time when you visit Big Island again! Mahalo!!!
We had a great time at the Abalone Farm tour with our guide Carlos. Who knew that the was so much to learn about abalone! We arrived early in order to try out the food truck ahead of time, which was great. Abalone were fixed several different ways and all equally delicious. I didn't quite know what to expect on an abalone farm tour, but it was amazing! Carlos was extremely knowledgeable and very patient with all of us, letting us handle the abalone and telling us just what to expect. I was impressed with the care that they took with growing the seaweed as well as the abalone, and how it is almost completely organic except for the fertilizer for the seaweed and the bleach used to clean the pens where the abalone are grown. All in all a terrific tour and one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii.
Thank you for your visit and appreciate your comments on the farm tour and food service. I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed a moment of your time with us during a trip to Big Island. Abalone isn't a daily food or common creature in the US, so you should have been amazed about information you heard from us. Please come back to us in the future whenever you have a chance! Mahalo!!!
We spend a few weeks on the Big Island, every year. Between the exorbitant rental car tax and kamainna golf rates being 1/2 as much, I think we are done. Since the Alaska and Hawaiian merger, our direct flights are not as convenient (unless you live in Seattle). I think Mexico makes much more sense
Thank you for your comment. We truly value your feedback; however, it seems that your comment may not be directly related to the services offered by Big Island Abalone. Please let us know if you have any comments on our service. Mahalo
