Una perfetta gita di un giorno da Londra alla scoperta di un autentico villaggio della campagna inglese che ha legami unici con una delle più famose scrittrici al mondo. Chawton è un delizioso villaggio dell'Hampshire, nel Parco Nazionale dei South Downs, con cottage fiabeschi col tetto di paglia, un bellissimo parco e una romantica chiesetta in pietra. Ma Chawton è soprattutto il luogo in cui Jane Austen ha vissuto felicemente gli ultimi otto anni della sua vita e ha scritto gran parte dei suoi romanzi, tra cui la versione finale di Orgoglio e Pregiudizio. Il 2025 è l'anno giusto per visitare Chawton perchè è il 250esimo anniversario della nascita di Jane Austen. In questo tour guidato di un’ora e mezzo, ti porterò alla scoperta del villaggio che Jane Austen conosceva e amava e ti offrirò un assaggio di come si vive in un villaggio della campagna inglese partendo dalla mia esperienza quotidiana di residente di Chawton.
La casa in cui Jane Austen ha vissuto otto anni con la madre, sorella Cassandra e l'amica del cuore Martha Lloyd prima della sua prematura scomparsa il 18 luglio 1817. Il tour parte e arriva davanti a Jane Austen's House, che si trova esattamente al centro del villaggio di Chawton. Nella mia introduzione fornirò alcune informazioni generali e di contesto su questo importante edificio, anche se, per una conoscenza completa, t'invito a vistarlo prima o al termine del mio tour perchè ne vale davvero la pena. Jane Austen's House è oggi un museo ottimamente gestito da una fondazione ed è universalmente considerato il luogo migliore al mondo in cui immergersi nella vita di questa straordinaria scrittrice. Ti consiglio di prenotare in anticipo la tua visita sul sito di Jane Austen’s House perchè gli ingressi sono limitati e, a causa delle celebrazioni per il duecentocinquantesimo anniversario della nascita di Jane Austen, nel 2025 sono previsti tantissimi visitatori da tutto il mondo.
La casa padronale erditata dal fratello di Jane Austen, Edward, insieme all'intera tenuta di Chawton e tante altre proprietà in Hampshire e Kent. Jane Austen parla spesso di Chawton House nelle sue lettere e la chiama scherzosamente "The Great House", la Grande Casa. Durante il tour faremo una sosta davanti all'ingresso di Chawton House dove fornirò alcune informazioni generali e di contesto su questo importante edificio, anche se, per una conoscenza completa, t'invito a vistarlo al termine del mio tour perchè ne vale davvero la pena. La casa è gestita da una fondazione ed è molto bella all'interno. Ha uno splendido parco di vari ettari che è aperto al pubblico tutto l'anno e gratuito. Chawton House è uno splendido esempio di una tipica residenza inglese di campagna con bellissimi interni e tante connessioni con Jane Austen. La prenotazione anticipata non è necessaria - i biglietti possono essere acquistati direttamente sul posto.
La bella chiesa di epoca vittoriana che oggi è la parrocchia del villaggio di Chawton ma che, ai tempi di Jane Austen, era la cappella privata della famiglia Knight ed era parte della tenuta di Chawton House di proprietà di suo fratello Edward.

The village tour was very interesting. It was very exciting to discover so many details about the history of Chawton and the life of Jane Austen. Despite the heat, Laura did not hold back in her storytelling, making the day very pleasant for us; she was very professional, helpful, friendly, and welcoming, answering all our questions and curiosities. This review is dedicated to Laura and for the information of all those interested in a tour about Jane Austen in the town of Chawton. It can happen in life to remember a particularly successful guided tour, well here we are beyond that. This was one of the best cultural experiences I have ever had. Laura, who lives in Chawton, did not just tell us stories connected to the life of JA, but she teleported us there between 1809 and 1817. The story of a person is better understood if one dwells on the personal relationships they have with family members, neighbors, friends and enemies, with people one would like to meet and those one tries to avoid instead. The story of a person is influenced by the physical context where it takes place, by the houses, the cottages, the places of reflection, the streets, the gardens, the waters, the paths that destiny leads you to cross and that today perhaps no longer appear as they did then. In Laura's passionate story, I, my wife, and our friends found all of this and Jane Austen ceased to be just a historical figure, but became someone close whom I would like to be friends with. I will be forever grateful to Laura for everything she gave us and I invite you to contact her to take a tour with her and Jane Austen!

I am part of a small group which meets to chat in Italian every fortnight. This tour was a supplmentary event, to make us work our Italian harder! From start to finish it was fascinating, clearly explained and thought-provoking.

Our guide Laura was friendly and very knowledgeable. She kept us out of the rain as much as possible, but also walked us around Chawton and kept us entertained. It was a delight to meet her and hear her stories about Jane Austen and the people she knew.
I did the Italian version of this walking tour with fellow students from my adult learning class. Laura was great, in costume and clearly enjoying herself which was infectious. She spoke clearly and not too fast so I was able to follow most of what she was saying, although it was a help that I had visited the house shortly before and so understood quite a lot of the subject matter. There was also other information. It was quite tiring concentrating so much on a hot day but altogether a positive experience. It really gave me an insight into life in the period and has re-kindled my interest in the literature of Jane Austen. Recommended.
I met Laura during a tour I took last year, and this year I decided to do it again in the company of my niece and sister-in-law. I had a great time. The day, meteorologically speaking, was not one of the best. I waited for Laura's arrival at the pub located across from Jane Austen's house, then we went on the tour. The passion and professionalism with which Laura performed her work was truly excellent. Clear, precise, and exhaustive on every topic. She kindly welcomed us into her residence. What a spectacle!
