Itinerario

We were picked up and dropped off at Hotel Eyja, which we appreciated. The actual tour departed from the bus station. The drive time to the Lava Tunnel was about 45 minutes, providing a nice scenic drive. Several busses arrived but were about 20 - 30 minutes apart, so there was not overcrowding. The guides provided safety helmets (Required) and walking sticks (if desired) The guide led us through the tunnel and provided very good information about the flow of the lava, why it was so boulder strewn and the basis for the various colors in the rocks. He was very knowledgeable and presented the information in clear and informative manner. He also managed the time and pace to make it easy for group to stay together. If you are looking for the smooth tunnel formation like Hawaii, this will be totally different. Also note that the tunnel will be cool and damp with dripping water throughout. Also note that there can be some rocks to step on/over and there will be several steps up and down with one set being about 20 steps each way that will be considered steep if you have bad knees. This tour is a good initiation to the geologic history and formations on Iceland, The guides provide a good history/explanation. Our group found it interesting and worthwhile.
Firstly, instructions to find our guide was not clear. We were taken by shuttle bus to another mini bus with the most grumpy driver ever. On the whole of the journey no information offered. The complete opposite to a previous tour. Our guide at the tunnels did give us information once we were inside the tunnels but sketchy information prior. The lava tunnels were very wet. We were hurried through the last part as the guide was concerned our driver would be cross at having to wait.
It is an expensive tour. Paid almost the same amount as for the full day South coast tour. One hour in the cave was not worth time spent and money paid. Very slippery path in the cave. Do not recommend for seniors.
Dear Sasha, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the experience did not meet your expectations. While we only provided the transfer service for this excursion and were not the operator of the cave tour itself, we’re sorry to learn that you felt the visit did not offer the value you had anticipated. We understand that the duration of the cave visit and the challenging terrain, particularly the slippery paths, may not be suitable for everyone, especially some senior travellers. We appreciate you sharing your experience, as feedback like yours can be helpful for future guests when choosing the excursion that best suits their interests and abilities. Thank you again for your comments, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you on another Iceland adventure in the future. Best regards, Rute

Picked us up at the hotel. Then we went to the bus terminal and got on another bus. When we walked in, was told to get helmets and turn lights on. There was enough helmets but some of the lights didn’t work. It is cold down there so dress according. It is very rocky and rough walking. Multiple stairs. Need good stamina and endurance. If you get motion sickness easily, this may not be your cup of tea. Guide was great. Answered all questions and very knowledgeable.

July 4, 2026 we were dropped off. I had to ask the ticket counter what to do. Informed me that the tour guide would be taking us in shortly. Helmets and walking poles were provided. Our tour guided us into the amazing lava tunnel. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. There are a lot of steps and uneven paths, the walking pole were very helpful. Overall I enjoyed it very much.
