Itinerario
Ci incontriamo all'estremità ovest della Cattedrale di St Paul, vicino alla grande scalinata. Questa meraviglia fu costruita da Sir Cristopher Wren dopo il Grande Incendio del 1666. L'incendio distrusse gran parte della Londra medievale, ma ci sono molti luoghi sopravvissuti nelle vicinanze. Sir Christopher ha un ruolo negli altri edifici che vedremo, quindi dobbiamo conoscere lui e Londra prima del 1666. È a 18 minuti a piedi da St Bart's.
Sulla strada per il Priorato di San Bart ci fermeremo al memoriale di William Wallace l'eroe scozzese che lottò per l'indipendenza scozzese.
La Chiesa di San Bartolomeo il Grande è un gioiello del XII secolo. Gran parte di esso sopravvisse non solo al Grande Incendio del 1666 ma anche alla Riforma, alla Guerra Civile e al Blitz della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. il lato orientale della chiesa conserva splendidi archi, colonne e tombe. Si tratta di una chiesa paleo-normanna e sarà prezioso confrontarla con le altre chiese che visiteremo costruite nel tardo medioevo.
Discuteremo delle mura della Londra medievale e ci fermeremo a Newgate uno dei vecchi punti di ingresso di Londra. In seguito ha guadagnato fama come prigione. È il luogo in cui è stata costruita e tuttora utilizzata la Old Bailey (Corte penale di Londra).
Se hai visto o letto Il Codice Da Vinci, allora conosci i Cavalieri Templari. Questi monaci-cavalieri medievali erano una ricca e misteriosa forza crociata. Avevano una grande ricchezza e costruirono questa chiesa nel XII secolo. Anche questo è sopravvissuto al Grande Incendio, ma i restauratori vittoriani hanno causato la maggior parte dei danni! Il suo incredibile soffitto a volta in pietra è sopravvissuto al Blitz quando le bombe piovevano tutt'intorno. C'è un ottimo collegamento qui con i padri fondatori degli Stati Uniti, quindi non dovresti perderlo!

First of all, Dr Geoff knows his history! His tour was top notch and we really enjoyed all the sites and stories about medieval London…he speaks very articulately and intelligently without being academic or boring…in fact, he makes the history come alive and fascinating! He is easy going and friendly and we are very excited to book one of his longer trips next summer to learn more about medieval Britain…highly recommend Dr Geoff to show you the highlights of English history!

This walking tour through medieval London was a truly captivating journey into the city’s lesser-known history. Dr. Geoff is an excellent tour guide. He is an extremely learned man with expert knowledge on medieval Churches and British history. Dr. Geoff began the private tour at St. Paul's Cathedral and took us to St. Bartholomew the Great as well as Temple Church. The latter two Churches are hidden relics of the Middle Ages that still survive today. He answered all our questions eloquently while explaining the architectural research he completed at Oxford. I certainly recommend Dr. Geoff's tour to anyone who is interested in the rich history of England and its Churches.
