La città è situata nella parte più isolata delle Bocche di Cattaro (la baia di Cattaro). Risalente al periodo degli Illiri, Cattaro è diventata un importante centro commerciale e artistico durante il Medioevo. Nel corso dei secoli, molti imperi si sono battuti per il controllo della città: prima città autonoma dell'Impero Bizantino, poi città della Serbia medievale, in seguito sotto il dominio ungherese e veneziano, la città ottiene l'indipendenza per poi tornare sotto il controllo veneziano ed essere occupata da Francia e Austria e, infine, diventare parte della Iugoslavia. Il tour di Cattaro inizia presso la porta principale del centro storico, conosciuta anche come la porta del mare (Morska Vrata), dove incontrerai la tua guida.

Dopo aver oltrepassato la porta del mare, il gruppo trascorrerà 5-10 minuti in Piazza d'Armi ascoltando la storia della Torre dell'orologio e del Pilastro della vergogna.
Dopo una sosta in Piazza d'Armi, il tour continuerà fino a Palazzo Beskuca...
Il tour ci conduce al palazzo Pima, dove scoprirai come vivevano le famiglie di Cattaro nei secoli addietro.

This was a short small group walking tour. Our guide, Marja, was engaging, clearly knew her history and enjoyed her work. She was easy to find right outside the Main Gate. The tour is only one hour, as shown in the listing, so it isn't in great depth, but does give you a good feel for this very old city in this new country (Montenegro gained independence in 2006.) At the conclusion, she provided a variety of suggestions of other ways to explore and enjoy the old town area. We would have happily spent more time with Marja.

The old town of Kotor is a wonderful destination. It deserves a visit. Beautiful historic city, well-preserved, and friendly people. It is a medieval walled city on the Bay of Kotor with mountains in the background. It is pedestrian-only with narrow cobblestone streets and alleys. The city walls are enchanting and add to the atmosphere.
