Tomar e il suo unico Convento di Cristo (patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO) hanno un posto speciale nella storia del mondo e un sacco di storie, arte e architettura da non perdere. Questa affascinante città medievale nel Portogallo centrale divenne inaspettatamente la nuova sede ufficiosa dei leggendari e potenti Cavalieri Templari, poco dopo che furono sciolti per ordine del Vaticano, nel XIV secolo. Furono ribattezzati “Ordine di Cristo” e, alla fine, uno dei suoi Gran Maestri divenne fondamentale per l’Età delle Scoperte: Enrico il Navigatore. Più tardi, nel 1581, il Convento di Cristo fu il palcoscenico per la creazione dell'Unione Iberica suggellando la creazione del più grande impero del mondo dell'epoca. Ti porteremo attraverso il Convento di Cristo e il Castello, le chiese più belle della città, visiteremo la sinagoga ebraica e ti daremo un sapore dell'affascinante Tomar moderna. Great tour of smaller town with huge history. Despite not being able to see castle due to reconstruction, the town itself and monastery were well worth the visit. Great explanation of how Knights Templar become Order of Christ and led to Portugal’s age of discovery.

Huge complex of which some parts have been beautifully restored. In the complex a route has been plotted so that many parts can be seen. Fantastic is the old chapel, you could say the "heart" of the complex. Furthermore, the complex is already impressive by its size. Parts that have not yet been restored also give a good impression of the grandeur that this monastery has had within the church but also in the spatial environment. Don't forget to admire the garden in addition to the buildings.

This convent is absolutely spectacular. It is very inexpensive to tour - 3 Euro for seniors; 6 for adults. It is incredibly beautiful and many areas have been restored. It was an amazing g experience and highly recommended.
