La fortezza di Hwaseong è un'imponente struttura dell'ultima parte della dinastia Joseon (1392-1910). La fortezza fu costruita come esposizione della pietà filiale del re Jeongjo verso suo padre.
Un Hwaseong Haenggung era un palazzo temporaneo in cui il re e la famiglia reale si ritirarono durante una guerra. Il Palazzo Hwaseong Haenggung è il più grande di questi, utilizzato dai re di Joseon sin dai tempi del re Jeongjo. Questo palazzo non viene utilizzato solo come riparo durante la guerra, ma anche il re Jeongjo rimase qui durante i viaggi per adorare la tomba di suo padre.
