Downunder Tours coordinated the day for us and were sperbly organised and kept us well informed . There was a major event on in town on the same day and the comapny ensured we were ont ime and not disrupted. We took the SkyRail to Kuranda and the train on the return trip. The SkyRail, was a great experience, from the moment we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff, through the guided rainforest tour (in the heavy rain!) , and the gorgeous scenery, right up to the departure and the obligatory gift shop. The hike into Kuranda itself was a little uphill and damp but not too difficult. Kuranda was surprisingly interesting and catered very well for the day tripper with plenty of food/drink choices and shops. There were also several attractions to see for a small additional fee. We chose a bird sanctuary, but there was also a butterfly house and a small zoo with all the classic aussie animals on show. The bird house was absolutely amazing and a great photo op. Beware, the Macaws are beatiful, tame birds..but they do bite very hard! The highlight of the day though was the scenic rail trip back to Cairns, we travelled gold class (worth every cent) , Great food , drink and service. The stop overlooking the Barron falls was spectacular , although it might benefit a bit from trimming back some of the undergrowth to improve the view. I realise it is a national park, however it would aid photos a lot. The next great photo op was at Stony creek and this is possibly better than the Barron Falls stop. In Cairns we were met by the friendly Downunder Tours staff, directed to the correct bus and ferried back to our hotel with no fuss. All up a great day, well organised, good value gteat views and some fantastic memories.
It was a worthwhile experience- and I’m glad I did it - however I didn’t need quite so much time at the markets so would have appreciated being able to come back by rail at 2pm gold class. I liked being able to experience the Skyrail (which was great) and the rail which also was great - I just didn’t want to spend so long at the markets
Spent the day on a private tour with Peter as our guide. Unfortunately the railway was not operating, but Peter made up for it with a continuation of our auto tour. Peter passed on his knowledge and experience of the region with his friendly manner. Beautiful scenery, especially views from the skyrail, the to a good lunch and shopping experience in Kuranda. Good tour!
Well organized day, many items of interest. Plenty of discretionary time to explore your interests, such as the Butterfly Sanctuary, or relax and have a cup of flat white. Very educational and pleasant day to learn about Cairns.
The skyrail was a lot of fun and we met interesting people in our car. The views were spectacular! The town of Kaunda was nice and we had a great time at their zoo (an optional, additional expense). There were some nice shops all over town. Unfortunately, our visit was on a Tuesday, when many of the shops, especially those making hand crafts, were closed. The train ride home in Gold Class was exceptional! We sat in big comfy chairs and were served food and wine/beer all included! Our friends who didn’t book gold class, sat on benches in train cars with a water cooler! Our posh ride home was the perfect end to a great day!
This isn’t really a tour - just transport and ticket acquisition for the experience. Our driver was friendly and gave a little spiel on the drive, but from there you’re on your own which is fine, but the description read more of a group guide.
Great trip but maybe a bit much time in Kuranda since we snacked and didn’t sit down to a lunch. We went to the butterfly sanctuary and bird world and enjoyed both. Didn’t do the koala attraction because we had done Featherdale. Up on the cableway in the morning and down on the train in the afternoon on the gold coach where we got unlimited beverages and 3 rounds of snacks and a lot of staff attention.
Very nice experience with Skytrain one way and the Scenic Railway the other. The time in Kuranda village was a bit too long the way it was arranged.
Would not miss it. Traveling on the sky train gives you a wonderful Birds Eye view of the area. We visited the bird, butterfly and koala sanctuaries which was great. There are many unique stores along with a great open market in Kuranda. The train ride was quite amazing and very magical. We had booked the gold card coach. Would definitely recommend.
The cable car and train were fun but there was too much time in town. There just wsnt much happening there
Dear Stephe, I'm glad to hear you enjoy the Kuranda Scenic Rail & Skyrail. They're 2 great attractions giving great views and time to experience the Rainforest. Too late for you now but if you ever visit again, we've got the options of different timings that give you more or less time in Kuranda. so next time, you could spend less time in the village. Kind regards Nicolas Vernerey Operations Manager
