When Cicco Barbaro, a carpenter who miraculously recovered the use of his arm as he prayed before the body of the recently deceased Rita, (considered her first miracle), he set about fashioning a new casket in which her body was then placed. Saint Rita of Cascia is considered patron saint of impossible causes.

St. Rita’s story is one of the power of prayer and of faith. Due to a mis-interpretation of some of the writings on her coffin, it had long been thought that her husband was abusive to her during their 18 years of marriage. Very often Saint Rita is portrayed as a long- suffering and even abused wife, whose husband was a violent drunkard, and an unfaithful spouse. When Cicco Barbaro, a carpenter who miraculously recovered the use of his arm as he prayed before the body of the recently deceased Rita, (considered her first miracle), he set about fashioning a new and solemn casket in which her body was then placed. This casket was decorated inside and out with images depicting Rita, Jesus and Mary Magdalene, as well as with symbols illustrating the spiritual influences on her life. There was also engraved upon its outer cover a poem which spoke of Rita, her suffering and her love. Pilgrims would come to pray before this casket, which was never buried in the ground but remained in a small room within the convent, exposed to the view of visitors. Here they would place devotional candles as signs of their affection and reminders of their prayers. Over many decades the smoke from these candles darkened the casket, eventually making it difficult to read clearly the poetic inscription. In time someone noticed that the poem spoke of a maritu feroce or violent husband. Preachers began to elaborate on this theme, describing Rita’s great heroism in patiently enduring the trials and sorrows which her spouse caused her. By the time the first biographies of Rita were written almost a century after her death, the stories of the violent husband had fully developed and have been handed down as one of the major themes of Rita’s virtuous life. It was not until the 20th century, when the nuns of Cascia had the monumental casket cleaned and restored, that the maritu feroce vanished. It was discovered that the actual wording was tantu feroce (so violent) and the context clearly referred to the fierce wound of Rita’s thorn, a suffering of quite a different kind. Saint Rita of Cascia is considered patron saint of impossible causes.
When we talk about Santa Rita, we immediately think of the city of Cascia, but what few people know is that, in fact, Santa’s hometown is Roccaporena, both in Umbria. You will see birth house of Rita, the room where she was born, and the house where she lived with her husband.
The Birthplace of Saint Rita in Roccaporena is a peaceful place where Saint Rita of Cascia was born and spent her early years. The small stone house has been preserved as a place of prayer and remembrance. Every year, many pilgrims visit to learn about her life and find inspiration in her faith.

This was an amazing experience and a spiritual journey. The Holy site is incredibly impactful and was only made better due to our tour guide, Ricardo, and driver, Luigi. They are both very special and kind people. Their passion for St. Rita was evident and added tremendously to our experience. This was a true highlight of our trip to Italy!

Louise and flodo were wonderful. they pick us up at out hotel on time and we're very accommodating. Louise was very informative and flodo was an excellent driver. he even had water waiting for us. I felt very spiritually while I was there. the lunch was the best lunch since I've been in Rome.

It is a sacred place so comments are subjective. We liked the organization, the availability and the welcome. The atmosphere that is perceived is profound and sacred and of great devotion. Many made available from 7am to 6pm with a spacious structure. In Sunday cases with large attendances there is a mega room adjacent to the basilica with dozens of seats available for solemn mass and wide-ranging blessings. Worth a trip.

This tour exceeded all expectations. Rosanna was an amazing guide who went above and beyond to make our experience a once in a lifetime opportunity. This trip was a personal pilgrimage for my 84 year old mother. Rosanna was able to secure us a private tour of the monastery, an audience with one of the sisters, with whom she could share her personal experiences with St Rita, and a first hand look at a new relic gifted to the basilica. My mother will never forget this trip. Her joy brings tears to my eyes whenever I think about it. And the trip to Roccaporena was the icing on the cake. Thank you Rosanna!!!

We arranged a private tour to Cascia and Roccaporena through Rome Italy Explora. From the initial contact, Rossana was extremely helpful and responsive, taking time to plan the trip to meet our specific requests and to respond to our numerous questions! On the day of the trip, Rossana and Luigi (our driver) arrived promptly, with a very new and comfortable car (as advertised) for the c.2.5 hour trip to Cascia. When we arrived in Cascia, Rossana had arranged for an English-speaking priest to guide us on a tour of the Monastery and Basilica, which are both beautiful and well worth a visit on a day-trip from Rome. Rossana allowed us the time to visit the Basilica at our leisure (and attend mass), but was always on hand to provide information, response to questions, assist with translation, and take photos!! Following a nice lunch in Roccaporena, we made the journey up the Scoglio to visit the site where St. Rita used to pray, before visiting the local church, her place of birth and marital home. Rossana very kindly accompanied us on the c.45 minute walk up and down the mountain to the Scoglio and was again very knowledgeable in terms of the life and history of St. Rita. Our sincere thanks to both Rossana and Luigi for a fantastic trip. I would happily recommend Rome Italy Explora (and Rossana) to anyone looking to organise a private tour whilst in Rome.

An awesome day to reflect and pray with Santa Rita. The tour guide Rossana was very friendly and engaging. She met us in the hotel lobby to start our journey together. Very respectful. She asked for our preferrences to ensure we had a great experience. Our hotel in Rome was 2 hrs and 40 min away from Cascia but the ride went by fast while chatting with Rossana. Worth every penny. Highly recommended.

Great day tour leaving Rome! Approximately 11⁄2 hours by road in a very beautiful natural landscape. The visit to the basilica and the monastery are worth the trip, further aggravated by the driver and companion who, after the visit to Casia, proposed the beautiful stop in Roccaporena, the place where Santa Rita was born and lived before entering the monastery. Fascinating landscapes (naturalistic and historical) in a very pleasant context in the Umbrian region
