Descrizione

We're ruined!

This is an interesting ancient archeological site and museum a short distance from Coimbra town centre. Despite the proximity, it's not particularly accessible by public transport, so we took a half day guided tour It's rather a hidden gem - certainly under tourists, but plenty to see. A particularly useful feature was the canopy over the mosaics: goid protection from the light rain we had on the day. There is a fair bit to see and we came away pleasantly surprised.

An amazing archeological site.

This is a site which is definitely worth visiting. The area is quite large and set in the countryside. The ruins are a work in progress as excavations are continuing. The site give a very good picture of what the city must have been like with beautiful mosaics and complex water systems for fresh and waste water. Make sure to bring an umbrella if you visit in the summertime as the sun will be quite hot.

Wonderful immersion in the Roman world

They are worth a visit in a very nice setting where you can eat or picnic. Beautiful mosaics shown in context as well as the water bodies of the villas. In addition possibility to take walks from the site.

Roman ruins in Portugal.

Amazing close up views of the Roman ruins. Eva was a wonderful guide , very knowledgeable about the whole area —took us right to train station after. Got to Coimbra ahead and add the Coimbra university —can add that on your own. Took train from Porto, uber to university. Need ticket to library—cabinet of curiosity not to be missed.

Hello! Thank you very much for such wonderful feedback about our tour and Eva's work. We're happy that you enjoyed it. Sorry that you skipped our University Tour though... there's a lot that people miss without a guide there, and us being former students with insider's stories, it's always a great experience. Next time, we'll be here for that ;) All the best! Sara

Great Guide to rather dull destination

There is very little to see of Roman ruins especially if you have seen Rome, Pompeii, Herculaneum or any other Roman ruins. However, Eva, our guide provided so much interesting background on the Roman ruins as well as clarifying other Coimbra and Portugal historical and cultural queries. She definitely befriended us which added to our overall trip experience.

Hello! We're glad you enjoyed Eva's work :) However we're sorry that you didn't enjoy Conímbriga as much as most of our other travelers did! We also think Conímbriga is wonderful, regardless of having visited those other sites you have mentioned. Conímbriga is the biggest and most important Roman site in Portugal, and the ruins have complete panels of colorful mosaics thoughout, frescoes on walls, intact walls, the viaduct and remains of the acqueduct... and so much to see at the museum, that made part of the Roman's everyday life! The Government just acquired many more hectars of land, so in the next years there will be even more to see. All the best!

Extensive Roman ruins are worth the logistics to reach them

Well worth the trip out from Coimbra to see these extensive Roman ruins and the museum. The ruins are mostly open air with roped path and elevated walkways except for the restored fountain area which is covered by a large steel canopy. Many of the floor tile mosaics are exposed and in excellent condition. There’s been many questions and few responses on how to reach these ruins if you are not driving yourself. Transdev, a local bus company who provides local bus service through much of northern Portugal, operates a 9:30 outbound to the museum parking lot and a 13:25 return bus. The logistics in Coimbra is confusing. The outbound bus leaves from the central bus station in Coimbra; however, DO NOT enter the bus station looking for or to catch the bus. Instead, stand at the exterior sidewalk bus stop located one or two doors down from the bus station (direction towards downtown Coimbra), on the same side of the street as the bus station. The bus stop signs note many bus numbers and routes, but not Transdev or Conimbriga. Watch for the Transdev bus pulling out from the bus station driveway, turning right and stopping at the bus stop. The route sign on the bus will say Conimbriga. Double check and ask the driver. The driver collects the bus toll in cash. At the ruins, the 13:25 bus was already waiting a little after 13:15 and actually left the parking lot a few minutes early. So leave plenty of time to catch the bus. I suggest walking the ruins first and going through the museum second, as it is close to the parking lot.

Take a historical tour of Conimbriga south of Combria and be amazed at the Roman Ruins amassed in Portugal.

We decided to tour this ruin instead of just visiting Coimbra. The best thing we did. Doing our own tour was so amazing and seeing the amount of ruins available was phenomenal. How they have been preserved all these years justified why all should tour this unprecedented location and why they are all here. The tiles were magnificent and reveals little wear after all this time. The archeological site and the museum exhibits what has been found to this point. They continue to explore to see what else can be found since this was a thriving city.
