I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Te Puia. Our guide was Māori, which added a personal and authentic perspective to the experience. I enjoyed the cultural performance, the delicious hāngī lunch, and the guided tour through the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, the Kiwi Conservation Centre, and the geothermal valley with its impressive geysers. The guide's narration helped me gain a greater appreciation for Māori culture, traditions, art, and history. I especially enjoyed learning about Māori arts and crafts, seeing the kiwi birds, and hearing about the cultural significance of various traditions and practices. The combination of cultural experiences and Rotorua's unique geothermal landscape made for a very memorable visit. Te Puia is an excellent place for anyone who wants to gain a broad understanding of Māori culture while also experiencing some of New Zealand's most remarkable geothermal attractions. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Rotorua.
I visited Rotorua in order to see the geysers and was not disappointed. There are a couple of places offering tours but I chose this one as I believe it is the oldest and had good reviews. I booked a tour for 10 am on a Sunday and there were probably about 30 people booked but they split us into two smaller groups. Our guide (call me Mr T.!) was excellent and informative. We went first to the Kiwi house where we were lucky enough to see two Kiwi birds awake and active - they apparently sleep for 20 hours a day so we were fortunate. We then went onto see the mud pools spluttering away and the geysers. One was very active during our visit. You then get a small tractor train back to the visitor centre before a tour of the three workshops where wood and stone carving and weaving are in action. Finally there is a cultural session, which takes place in the beautiful meeting house, and includes a Haka as well as an explanation of what the Haka is. Be prepared for the smell, which does linger in your clothes for the rest of the day. And I had a light lunch at the cafe there which was excellent. All in all this is an excellent tour and I think value for money.
It is a must for every visitor to New Zealand to understand it's Maori culture. It is quite far from Auckland by car but it was worth it. Hopefully ,I wish there was a direct bus early in the morning to catch from Auckland .
At 77, time was running out to satisfy a childhood want to see a Kiwi, a plopping volcanic mud poit and a geyser. All three satisfied in one day.
Tēnā koe (hello), Thank you for sharing your lovely review with us. We’re so glad to hear you were able to tick those childhood wishes off your list and experience seeing a kiwi, our bubbling mud pools, and Pohutu Geyser all in one visit. It’s always special to hear when manuhiri (visitors) leave with memories they’ve been hoping to make for many years. We hope your time with us in Rotorua was one to remember. Kia pai te rā (have a nice day)
Very nice overview of Maori culture and the Rotorua land. Kiwi enclosure is a rare experience.
The geyser with natural activity was fantastic and in a beautiful setting. Appreciated the vision of the kiwis and the traditional art school Morì. Quality shop with wide choice.
Tēnā koe (hello), Thanks so much for sharing your visit with us. We're so glad you enjoyed seeing Pōhutu Geyser in such a beautiful setting, and that the kiwi encounter was a special part of your time here too. It's also great to hear you enjoyed visiting the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute and had a look through our gift shop as well. We really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. Kia pai te rā (have a nice day)
This is an UNMISSABLE experience. Exceptionally organised, beautifully and thoughtfully presented, interesting and a brilliant way to see a few unique things in one trip! It’s a working school passing the unique Māori skills down, the Kiwi birds was fabulous, the geyser was amazing and the Māori experience was so well done. We had lunch at the end and couldn’t praise this place enough! Well done 🙌🏻
Tēnā koe (hello), Thank you for taking the time to share such lovely feedback. We’re really happy to hear you and your whānau (family) had such a great visit and that the experience felt so well put together from start to finish. It’s awesome to know you enjoyed the geyser, seeing our kiwi, the lunch, and learning more about Māori culture through the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute. Our kaimahi (team) put a lot of care into making sure manuhiri (visitors) get a real sense of the stories and skills being passed down. Really appreciate your kind words and support, it means a lot to the team here. Kia pai te rā (have a nice day)
It was fabulous!!! Everyone who are visiting NZ has to go there.
Our guide, Michael was great. Knowledgeable, energetic, was to answer any questions and had us so interested when explaining his tā moko. The natural landscape within Te Puia is absolutely stunning, unique and an absolute privilege to experience. The lunch banquet was delish!!! Plenty to choose from. Definitely recommend a visit to Te Puia to snyone who travels to Rotorua
Tēnā koe (hello), Really appreciate you taking the time to share this. Awesome to hear Michael made such a strong impression, he’s super passionate and loves sharing his kōrero (stories) behind things like his moko. Sounds like he kept everyone engaged which is exactly what we aim for. Glad you enjoyed the natural surroundings too, it really is a special place and not something you see every day. And good to know the hāng buffet hit the mark, having plenty of options and leaving full is always a win. Thanks again for the recommendation, means a lot to us and our kaimahi (team). We hope to see you back again sometime. Kia pai te rā (have a nice day)
Very close to Rotorua this site combines thermal and Maori experiences. We booked the tour the day beforehand to see both the 30 mins Haka welcome and the 90 mins guided tour. When we arrived early we were given the opportunity to see the Haka welcome first (instead of last) which we took up. We were then taken on a bus (to save our legs) to the kiwi house and onto the geysers (which are real and erupt on various timings) before returning to the Maori art and craft education centre which was very interesting. Our guide was articulate and informative. After the tour you are free to revisit the sites already visited at your leisure, including the kiwi experience, the geysers, etc. This was my husband's favourite "thermal" experience because of the Maori aspects.
Tēnā koe (hello), Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. Sounds like you really made the most of the day, from the cultural performance to the guided tour and exploring at your own pace after. Awesome to hear the flexibility on arrival worked out well for you too. We’re glad you enjoyed seeing the geysers in action and visiting the kiwi house, and it’s great to know the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute stood out as interesting. It's really special hearing it was your husband’s favourite thermal experience, especially because of the Māori cultural side of things. That means a lot to us. Ngā mihi (thank you) again for taking the time to leave a review. Kia pai te rā (have a nice day)
