Durante questa gita di un giorno, l'autista privato in berlina ti condurrà attraverso le fortezze più interessanti dell'antica Khorezm: Dumon Kala - Guldursun Kala - Angka Kala - Janbas Kala - Ayaz Kala - Lago Akchakul - Toprak Kala - Fortezze di Kizil Kala. Toprak Kala risale al periodo Kushan, intorno al II e III secolo d.C. ed era la residenza reale dei re del Khorezm. Il luogo, che servì dapprima come santuario reale, fu brevemente abbandonato all'inizio del IV secolo e poi, dopo alcuni restauri, fu utilizzato come cittadella amministrativa della città.
Guldursun Kala è una città fortificata. Le mura esterne e le torri risalgono al XII secolo d.C. Durante gli scavi archeologici sono state rinvenute all'interno del sito molte ceramiche antiche e medievali e molti oggetti in bronzo e monete. Le monete indicano che l'ultimo periodo di occupazione è legato all'anno 1220, durante il regno di Muhammad Khorezmshah e il tempo dell'invasione mongola di Khorezm.
Janbas Kala possiede uno dei sistemi di fortificazione più arcaici risalenti a quel periodo protoantico. Tutte e quattro le sue mura laterali sono in condizioni relativamente buone e raggiungono in alcuni punti fino a 20 metri di altezza. Janbas Kala differisce dalla maggior parte delle altre fortezze perché non ha torri sulle mura esterne. Ciò significava che il forte era potenzialmente vulnerabile da un attacco alle sezioni inferiori delle sue mura. Gli architetti militari avevano tentato di superare questa debolezza progettuale includendo alcune feritoie molto inclinate in modo che alcuni arcieri potessero tirare lungo la facciata delle mura.
Ayaz Kala è una delle fortezze più spettacolari della zona. In effetti ci sono non una ma tre fortezze raggruppate insieme su e attorno a una collina prominente all'estremità orientale della catena del Sultan-Uiz-dahg. La fortezza forniva difesa contro le incursioni dei nomadi. Una strada sterrata conduce a un piccolo gruppo di yurte, un centro di riposo turistico affacciato su un lago poco profondo ma pittoresco. Fu probabilmente fondata nel periodo Afrighid, tra il VII e l'VIII secolo d.C. C'è un lago – il lago Akchakul tra Toprak e Ayaz Kala. Ci sono anche campi di yurta e ristoranti vicino al lago dove puoi gustare piatti e bevande locali. In estate è possibile nuotare e fare bagni di sabbia nel lago Akchakul.
Kizil Kala fu originariamente costruito nel periodo tardo antico, dal I al IV secolo d.C., ma fu abbandonato e poi ricostruito nei secoli XII-XIII alla vigilia delle invasioni mongole. Duman Kala composto da tre sezioni adiacenti: un recinto occidentale di forma quadrata con torri angolari; una cittadella più piccola di forma quadrata; e un recinto settentrionale quadrilatero irregolare, i cui resti non sono più visibili. La cittadella occidentale è la sezione meglio conservata, soprattutto lungo il lato settentrionale, ma rimane solo una piccola parte del recinto orientale.
Nel BC, l'Amudarya (Bue) scorreva in due direzioni, la prima era il fiume Akcha e la seconda il fiume Suvyorgan. Il motivo per cui questa parte del fiume si chiama Akcha era la fortezza di Akchakhan sulla riva sinistra dell'attuale Akchakol, ed esiste ancora oggi. Il nome del castello prende il nome dall'antica regina di Khorezmshahs Akchahon. Dopo che il fiume cambiò corso, si formò l'attuale lago Akchakul che mantenne il suo nome. Il lago ha uno splendido paesaggio intorno insieme a una pescheria e un ristorante.

A driver came to pick me up at my hotel in Khiva at 9 a.m. I was alone during the whole day of the tour His name is Sarvar and he was very kind, very smiling, and always in a good mood It was a real pleasure The car was comfortable with air conditioning The landscapes were interesting, we passed through cities, villages, fields, and large arid expanses He dropped me off at 7 fortresses Some more damaged and dilapidated than others Sometimes parts of the surrounding walls were rebuilt so that one could really get a sense of them. 2 required payment (20,000 sums = €1.40). The day before, the manager sent me the audio explanations for each of the fortresses in French. I was able to listen to them quietly to fully understand. Then around 4:30 p.m., we arrived at the yurt camp. I was assigned one with 3 beds, but I was alone inside. The yurts are very comfortable with electricity and even air conditioning. The experience of sleeping inside was super magical and comfortable. The evening meal was very good; we ate outside all together, but there is a dining room if it is cold. Breakfast was also very good. We then left the next day for Khiva around 9:15 a.m. I recommend it It was very good.

I had a great day with Olimjon, exploring 7 ancient fortresses in karakalpakstan. Olimjon was very helpful at answering our questions and providing context to the ruins. I also appreciated that he gave us some self exploring time so we could take our time appreciating the areas. I recommend this tour as a lovely excursion out of Khiva ancient city.

This was a wonder day. Our guide was incredible. He had so much knowledge of Uzbek history and of the fortresses. He was also a very safe driver. He took us to a local restaurant for lunch which was fantastic. The fortresses themselves were incredible to see and we were provided audio which gave us the history of the fortresses. Exciting time to visit fortresses together with family despite cold temperature outside. Camel riding is another fun time.
We booked a private tour to see all of the Kalas. The tour was good. We ended up with another group travelling in a separate car but with the same guide. This wasn't really what we booked and meant we didnt have the amount of time we wanted at each site. We booked a private tour for a reason as we like to have time at each site and be able to decide where we stay longer or shorter times. The car was a standard saloon car with AC that didnt quite work. It also meant that at the final kala we couldn't drive up to the site and walking path. We did the last Kala on our own, the guide stayed at the camp site. It would have been good to have more indepth historical information about the sites spanning the different periods of history. If you drive this could be an easy self drive day trip.

Khiva Fortress is fabulous, containing much to see and be in awe of! Beautiful monuments, informative museums, history everywhere! The fortress is well kept, clean and tidy. Worth a visit!

As a solo female traveler I felt completely safe with Sarvar. I was sent some audio files about the forts before going, but Sarvar is still learning English so the conversation was limited and he didn't know a great deal about the sites we visited, but he was easy to be with. You do have to walk alone to the sites and the last one is a bit of a trek. Lunch was a pleasant enough roadside restaurant but I was a bit sad there was no fried fish by a lake like other reviews have mentioned. I'm glad I went and it waa really nice to get away from the city, but if you're by yourself it's a very long day and I think a half day tour might be more enjoyable.
The owner, Olimjon, was really courteous and helpful. Not only did he personally accompany us to see the fortresses, but he also bought us train tickets, which in Uzbekistan are not easy to buy. Very competent, speaks excellent English, precise and punctual. Highly recommended

We spent a very nice day visiting all these beautiful sites! Organization at the top, we were often alone to visit, we were able to make the most of it!
