Il canale Otaru è un classico punto di riferimento quando si tratta di famose attrazioni turistiche dell'Hokkaido. Un tempo centro di distribuzione dell'Hokkaido, vantava una popolazione che superava persino quella di Sapporo. A quel tempo il canale veniva utilizzato per scaricare le navi tramite chiatte e veniva stabilito per allungare la distanza che le merci potevano essere distribuite. Alla fine il canale non era più necessario per svolgere la sua funzione una volta stabiliti i bacini e doveva essere collocato in discarica. Tuttavia, attualmente rappresenta un luogo in cui cittadini e turisti possono rilassarsi e divertirsi con le sue passeggiate e le lampade a gas che illuminano le sponde del fiume.
Gli edifici storici di Otaru City dell'inizio del XX secolo sono ora utilizzati come varie risorse per il turismo. La base d'arte Otaru situata di fronte al canale Otaru attraverso Rinkosen Street è una di queste strutture. Se sei in viaggio per piacere, ti consigliamo di assaggiare i buongustai e lo shopping. Entrambi possono essere fatti nella via commerciale Sakaimachi Dori di Otaru, situata nella parte interna di Rinkosen Street, parallela al canale Otaru. È una strada a senso unico che si estende per circa 900 metri da North Wall Street fino al Marchen Crossroads dove troverai la filiale di Otaru della Bank of Japan. Entrambi i lati della strada sono fiancheggiati da vecchi negozi mercantili ed edifici in stile occidentale. Vicino al canale Otaru, è un altro luogo turistico molto popolare.
Otaru può essere noto per la sua influenza nostalgica di storici edifici occidentali e artigianato del vetro, ma c'è anche un punto che trasmette la storia del Giappone da molto tempo fa. Uno di questi luoghi è il Tanaka Sake Brewery, fondato nel 1899. Chiunque può divertirsi passeggiando nei vari splendidi paesaggi della storica Otaru. Affacciato su questa splendida città di mare e sul Mar del Giappone è il Monte. Tengu, a circa 15 minuti in auto dall'Otaru IC. Il monte La funivia Tengu può portarti dai piedi della montagna fino in cima, una distanza totale di 735 metri, in circa 4 minuti. Dalla cima della montagna è anche possibile ottenere una splendida vista della penisola di Shakotan.

This was our first day in Japan and our guide was wonderful! She had beautiful English and had a lot of little tidbits of knowledge about Otaru and navigating around Japan in general. She was a delight! We saw so much and learned a little as well. It was a wonderful day.

Our guide, Fumiko Yoshizawa was delightful. It was a particularly cold day and she brought us hand warmers which was so very thoughtful. Clearly Fumiko loves her city and loves sharing it with visitors. She contacted us several times before the tour to ensure when and where to meet her. She took us to a local restaurant that we would not have found on our own and guided us to try dishes we probably would not have tried without her encouragement. The food was delicious. She took us to several places and gave us rest periods as needed. She is a great tour guide.

Bad tour. Waste of money. I could not understand the guide. His English was terrible. Really nothing to see, except shops to spend money on stuff I don’t want or need.

It was disappointing to learn that the museum we had originally planned to close was closed, but he quickly suggested the Otaru General Museum. There, we learned about the history of Otaru while listening to the guide. We met our guide, Mr. Yakuwa, for the first time in the lobby of the hotel where we were going to stay, and he was a dandy man about the same age as us, so we were able to ask him to guide us with peace of mind. At a sushi restaurant that Mr. Hakkuwa had booked in advance for lunch, we had a good meal. After that, the half day was full of shopping in Sakaimachi street, exploring the canal, and enjoying delicious sweets as a break. Thank you very much. As a side note, our dinner was undecided, but the beer restaurant that our guide told us about just before we parted was great in terms of atmosphere and taste.
