This is an absolutely wonderful museum that tells the story of African American music in a comprehensive and engaging way. After viewing a short introductory film, you move into a central corridor called the Rivers of Rhythm. From there, five main galleries branch out and cover the development of the genres of gospel, the blues, jazz, rhythm & blues, and hip hop. Each of the galleries is organized mostly chronologically, and there is a massive amount of content, including text, photos, diagrams, artifacts, and interactive audio and video elements. There are also plenty of profiles of notable and lesser-known musicians. The exhibits do a great job of providing context and telling a very thorough story of how each style evolved. There is also a feature gallery for temporary exhibitions, but it wasn't open when I visited. The gift shop is well stocked, and all of the staff members were very friendly. It's hard to believe this museum is only five years old--its research and organization make it seem like a more venerable institution, and it certainly can be counted among the finest music museums in the country.
Outstanding experience at the African-American Music Museum. The curator was excellent. I loved all the interactive exhibits. Definitely a must do when you visit Nashville.
Fun and informative , my husband I learned a lot about African American music and heritage. I would definitely tell my friends and family members to come visit .
Best museum we have been to. All of the family had a great time, as there are things for all ages. All the music we grew up with such as jazz, blues, soul and modern genres.
If you love history and going to museums, you will not be disappointed. This museum has only been around for 5 years and it's a wonderful visit. A lot of history of African American music from Jazz, Blues, Gospel, R & B, Hip Hop and more. I really enjoyed "singing" with the Bobby Jones Choir. That was a lot of fun. You can download a playlist but just note you'll only hear a few seconds of the songs. If you want the full playlist you have to download through shopify (I think) for a charge. I liked that they had lockers for your personal belongings. And it was free. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The museum store was ok, but since they are a fairly new museum, it may take time to expand upon their store. The museum is located on Broadway (downtown area). Once you're done with the museum there is plenty other things to do on Broadway. I think it is a good location but not as visible so not sure how many tourists know of its existence. Highly recommend visiting this wonderful museum.
Most museums are "look but don't touch," but being able to actually mix a blues track or record your own verses in the hip-hop gallery makes it feel a lot more personal.
Amazing experience! The interactive experiences were fun. I highly recommend this
This was an amazing and informative experience. The details of every single musical era was fascinating. The interactive displays were so much fun. Some of the songs reminded me of my childhood memories. I highly recommend this museum to anyone who’s interested in learning about musi culture. It really could take a whole day to complete!
Very interesting and interactive muesum. Great for most ages. Loves the live music at the end and how you can make music and save it to your Spotify account.
It was a very good learning experience. I loved the flow of the different genre's. I would visit the museum again.
