Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience: Traditional Honey Hunting in Nepal

Book your tour with Bil! He is an excellent passionate tour guide and ensured the tour would go smooth. He also went out of his way to show me all the mountains and beautiful scenery in Pokhara and made the trip extra memorable! I recently had the incredible opportunity to join a traditional Honey Hunting Tour in Nepal, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the remote cliffs of central Nepal, this tour offered a raw, authentic glimpse into one of the world’s oldest and most daring traditions. From the very beginning, the journey was immersive. Our local guides—descendants of the indigenous Gurung community—were not only experts in the practice, but also warm, passionate storytellers. They shared the rich history and spiritual significance of honey hunting, making us feel connected to something much deeper than just an adventure. The trek to the honey hunting site was breathtaking. We hiked through terraced hills, dense forests, and quaint mountain villages that felt untouched by time. Upon reaching the cliffs, we watched in awe as the honey hunters scaled vertical rock faces with nothing but handmade ladders and ropes—no harnesses, no modern safety gear. It was both nerve-wracking and awe-inspiring. WOULD RECOMMEND TO ALL TRAVELERS!!!

Dear Hassan, Wow—thank you so much for this powerful and beautifully written review! We’re beyond thrilled that your experience with the traditional Honey Hunting Tour was everything you hoped for and more. It’s truly one of Nepal’s most remarkable living traditions, and we're so glad you connected deeply with the people, the story, and the spirit behind it. Bil was absolutely honored to guide you—he hasn’t stopped talking about how wonderful it was to explore Pokhara and the hills with someone as curious and appreciative as you. Your kind words mean the world to us and the local Gurung community who keep this ancient tradition alive with so much pride. We hope this once-in-a-lifetime journey stays with you forever—and we’d love to welcome you back to Nepal anytime for another unique adventure. Until then, thank you again, and safe travels always! Warm regards, Ajay

I highly recommend Swotah Travel and Adventure Company and the Millennium Homestay Trek

My sister and I just completed a tour with Swotah that included parts of the Millennium trek, and tours in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini. The trek was an incredible experience with RajKuman as our guide. My heart goes out to all the families we met on the Millennium trek who shared their homes and lives with us, and made us feel so welcome. We had an excellent, reliable and safe driver for transport between locations. All our guides for Kathmandu tours, Chitwan, and Lumina were smart, knowledgeable, insightful, passionate about the area, and spoke wonderful English. Swotah selected very comfortable accommodation for us, looked after us very well, and were there 24/7 if we had any questions or concerns. They really went the extra mile. I highly recommend Swotah Travel and Adventure Company and the Millennium Homestay Trek.

Go Swotah Travel for a trip of a lifetime!!

Wow! Cannot say enough good things about Swotah and the trip they organized for myself and my sister (both of us over age 65). The millennium trek was challenging but the home stays made the work worthwhile. Every tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Rajkumar, our guide in the trek, was so supportive of me when I thought I could not climb one more hill. Ajay promptly answered so many questions for us before we decided on his company and throughout our 18 day tour he or one of his staff members continued to check with us that things were going well. Nepal is a beautiful country but don’t let the short distance between cities fool you. Poor road conditions can make the relatively close 150 miles between Lumbini and Kathmandu seem like a continent. Seriously, it took 11 hours of skilled driving for us to go that distance. Kudos to our driver for being so capable on those roads! We were also pleased that we were driven around in an electric car thus lessening our carbon footprint.

An Authentic and Unforgettable Experience on the Millennium Trek!

The Millennium Trek was absolutely extraordinary! While Annapurna or Mount Everest is packed with tourists, this trek is refreshingly different—you’ll only encounter locals who warmly welcome you. Often, they share fruits from their garden or invite you for a tea, making you feel right at home. Nepali people said to me that If I want to see the real Nepal, the countryside is the place, and this trek takes you straight to it. The trail is also full of adventure: jungle paths, terraced rice fields, rivers, bridges, and plenty of ups and downs. Along the way, you’ll discover hidden gems like the Millennium Cave with hundreds of bats—an unforgettable spot! You’ll also have the chance to meet local shamans and learn about their rituals. And to share dinner every day with another family at their home. And most importantly: the people you trek with! I had Rajkumar as my guide and Maila as my porter, and they were fantastic—knowledgeable, cheerful, and always ready for a chat or a laugh. They know the area inside out, and even introduced me to their families. It felt like being with family, just from another side of the world. Highly recommend this trek with them!

Beautiful tour and cultural immersion

This was definitely an off-the-beaten path tour. We wound our way up and down some beautiful Nepal mountains (going no higher than about 6500 ft) and met many lovely, welcoming Nepalese villagers. Our homestay night accommodations were private and clean, and meals were delicious. Our guide, Raj Kumar, was excellent - always looking out for us and altering routes when needed. Villagers presented several cultural events for our benefit! My only caveat for this "flat" trek, is that there is actually a lot of climbing and descending each day, averaging maybe 2,000 or more feet up and down each day. We also spent a packed day in Kathmandu at the beginning of the trek visiting World Heritage sites with an excellent, knowledgeable guide. Finally, Swotah helped us by arranging a one hour Himalayas flight tour, flying past all of the incredible peaks, including Mount Everest, K2, Annapurna etc. In summary, it was an incredible cultural immersion type of trip, well-planned by Swotah, and well-executed by our guides and porter.

A truly amazing experience with Swotah Travel and Adventure!!

It is unfortunate that I am only able to give 5 stars for this review. I would give a million if this site would allow it! When first arriving to Nepal with my very close friends and travel companions, we were doing some trekking with another adventure outfit that also did a great job. However, it was on the journey with the other group that I met Kumar. After trekking beside him for the duration of our first large journey, my personal group became quite good friends with Kumar immediately (I would soon find out that his personality is like no other and his knowledge of his amazing country is second to none when requiring a guide). Once our first adventure had concluded, we immediately signed up with Kumar and his excellent son, Nino to go on an lengthy homestay trek to many of the most beautiful spots and small villages and towns imaginable. They introduced us to many amazing people and experiences that I will never forget as long as I live! They made sure that everything was taken care of in regard to food, lodging and nearly every other aspect of the journey. Needless to say, going on this adventure with Kumar and Nino was nothing short of incredible! My friends and I made a multitude of lifelong personal friendships, faced an entire town on fire and assisted in extinguishing the flames, hiked some of the most treacherous landscape on the planet, witnessed some of the most beautiful sights imaginable in the natural world and personally challenged ourselves everyday. I have never known such peace and quiet in my life as I did on the highest parts of our journey together, and until I am able to go again, I'm not sure that I will. I look forward to the prospect of returning to Nepal again someday in the future and reconnecting with my dear friends that I have come to recognize as virtually family! But with this review, I want to be sure to express my sincere opinion. Sure... You can go to Nepal and have a very nice series of hikes with a very nice crew that will take you very nice places and help you do some very nice things. But... If you are truly up for the adventure of a lifetime, why would you not book and travel with the amazing team at Swotah Adventures?? In the grand scheme of life, I believe it would be foolish not to! You would be missing out on not only the greatest sights on the planet and conquer the greatest test of endurance, patience and fortitude of your life, but you will see and do things nearly no one else has done. You will make spectacular life-long friendships and you will leave Nepal wondering only when you will be able to return again! Do Something you never thought you could and truly surprise yourself!

Great, a must do!

There is nothing better than Nepal and its magnificent landscapes for a trek. We had the chance to be accompanied for 6 days by Kumar with our children aged 5, 7 and 9 and it was a great experience. The pace was perfectly adapted, the people were very kind throughout the course, the food was very good and the landscapes were superb. We absolutely recommend!

Great company, perfect itinerary

We combined two days of the Millenium Trek with a yoga homestay, cultural sightseeing and four nights at a yoga retrreat in Pokhara. Swotah created an imaginative itinerary and looked after us excellently throughout, adjusting the travel to accommodate my hip injury and keeping in touch to ensure we were happy. The team are great, full of enthusiasm and keen to help, they want you to love Nepal and respect the environment: we did and we do!

The trip was just what I needed for a break from the city where I am from. I’ve hiked before but this time there were so much more elements which made the experience extraordinary. The scenery, the fresh air and the delicious meals were like a warm hug i never knew i needed. Overall, the activities were well-organised and i have had a great experience. Definitely recommended!!
