Il grande monastero di Meteoron è il più grande e il più antico di tutti. Il grande monastero di Meteoro fu fondato da San Atanasio il meteorite che fu il primo fondatore del monastero e l'organizzatore del sistematico Koenovion. Completamente costruito all'interno di una grande cavità di una roccia, questo monastero è molto indicativo del suo genere, rispetto a quelli che si vedono di solito sulle cime delle rocce. Un monaco sotto il nome di Nilos, nell'anno 1367 d.C., insieme con un altro monaco di nome Cipriano divenne i fondatori e i proprietari del monastero. Fu distrutto nel 1809, quando il ribelle e eroe locale Papathymios Vlahavas fu arrestato qui dall'esercito turco di Ali Pasha. Il percorso per questo monastero è molto semplice e piacevole.
Il santo monastero di Varlaam è il secondo monastero più grande. Si trova di fronte al grande monastero di Meteoro ed è stato fondato a metà del 14 ° secolo dall'esercitato Hosios Varlaam. L'elegante monastero Catholicon fu costruito in onore di Agioi Pantes nel 1541-42, da due fratelli di Ioannina, i monaci sacerdoti Hosioi Teofane e Nectarios gli Apsarades. Il primo è che il nome Anapafsas è stato attribuito da uno dei benefattori del monastero, mentre la seconda spiegazione ha a che fare con la posizione del monastero, la prima ad essere incontrata durante la salita e probabilmente servita ai pellegrini e ad altri visitatori come riposo posto prima di continuare.

Great Hiking Tour. Authentic! :-) But especially I want to thank Chris. He was great! Talking with each of us (kids and adults). Explaining history and geology of the Meteora. Our family recently visited Greece, and one of the highlights of our trip was a small-group hiking tour with Visit Meteora. Chris led our group on this hike and it was my favourite experience in Meteora! Beautiful countryside and views of the monasteries and the hike was fairly easy, some steep and slippery spots but it was a perfect experience if you love hiking and nature as well as the stunning views, and want to visit the largest monastery as well.

We did a hike to The Great Meteoron Monastery with our guide Christos, and it was absolutely amazing. Christos gave personal attention to everyone in the group and was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. It was a magical half-day walk into a dreamlike landscape of colors, scents, shapes, and history. The trail network is vast, like a natural maze—definitely something you shouldn’t explore without a local guide, as it’s easy to get lost. Our guide Chris was fluent in English, kind, and very knowledgeable, answering every question with ease. The trail itself was easy, yet offered breathtaking views throughout.
