Il magnifico tempio si affaccia sul Golfo del Bengala ed è stato un importante centro durante il regno dei Pallava quando Mahabalipuram era il principale porto del loro Regno. Costruito dal re Raja Simha all'inizio dell'VIII secolo, il Tempio della Riva è un punto di riferimento nel paesaggio architettonico dell'India. Marco Polo si riferiva a questo come le sette pagode. Il tempio esistente è l'ultimo sopravvissuto dei 7 che un tempo fungevano da faro per i marittimi.
Si tratta di templi monolitici scavati nella roccia costruiti nel VII secolo. Ognuno dei 5 ratha o carri è dedicato al cast principale dell'epopea Mahabharat - Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima e Yudhister. C'è anche una scultura di un elefante accanto al ratha di Nakul-Sahadeva. Una volta in piedi verso la parte posteriore dell'elefante noterete che c'è una somiglianza inquietante tra la parte posteriore del carro e l'elefante.
Successivamente visiteremo la Penace di Arjuna, un monumento a bassorilievo che è considerato uno dei più magnifici pezzi d'arte antica dell'India, raffigurante scene vivaci del Mahabharata. Il rilievo è lungo 100 piedi e alto 45 piedi! La storia principale raccontata è come Arjuna, uno dei fratelli Pandava, abbia eseguito severe austerità per ottenere l'arma di Lord Shiva.
Questo curioso masso sembra sfidare le leggi di gravità di Newton e non si è mosso di un centimetro nonostante si trovi in questa posizione precaria sul pendio da più di mille anni.
La grotta Varaha è scavata in un enorme pezzo di granito e risale al VII secolo. Questo tempio ha richiesto diversi decenni per essere completato.
La grotta Pandava è la più grande grotta-tempio di Mahabalipuram La grotta è sostenuta da sei pilastri e due lesene.

Si tratta di un imponente carro scavato in una sola pietra. Originariamente dedicata a Lord Shiva, IT ora ha la divinità di suo figlio Lord Ganesh.
Costruito nell’anno 640, IT è il faro più antico dell’India e uno dei più antichi al mondo.
