Wasya Dyaa, o l'Albero del Mal di Denti, è un idolo di legno situato vicino a Thahiti Tole a Kathmandu, che si ritiene possa curare il mal di denti. Tradizionalmente, si pensa che martellare una moneta nel legno dell’albero possa alleviare il dolore dentale. Questa pratica nasce da antiche credenze e continua ancora oggi, nonostante le moderne cure dentali. L'albero è associato al leggendario Bangemudha, e molti visitatori vengono ancora a pregare prima di vedere un dentista. Intorno al tempio si è sviluppato un polo dentale, con più di 20 cliniche, alcune risalenti al periodo Rana. Questo luogo fonde la mitologia nepalese e l'assistenza sanitaria moderna, e visitare Wasya Dyaa è un'esperienza unica per chiunque sia interessato alla cultura e alla tradizione locale, specialmente per chi ha mal di denti.
A sud-ovest di Asan Tole, all'incrocio di Kel Tole, il Tempio di Seto Machhindranath attira sia buddisti che indù. I buddisti lo vedono come Avalokiteshvara, mentre gli indù lo venerano come un'incarnazione di Shiva che porta la pioggia. Nel cortile, troverete piccoli santuari, chaitya (piccoli stupa) e statue, tra cui una figura femminile dall'aspetto europeo circondata da candele. Appena fuori dal tempio, due graziose statue bronzee di Tara sono sedute in cima a pilastri. All'interno, l'immagine a volto bianco di Seto Machhindranath è coperta di fiori. Sebbene l'età esatta del tempio sia sconosciuta, fu restaurato nel XVII secolo. All'uscita, vedrai il piccolo tempio tantrico Lunchun Lunbun Ajima, noto per le sue incisioni erotiche. Nelle vicinanze, i negozi offrono abbigliamento tradizionale nepalese, tra cui topi (cappelli) e daura suruwal (abito tradizionale), con versioni in miniatura per i bambini.
La Kumari, conosciuta anche come la Dea Vivente, è un simbolo sacro di potere e purezza a Kathmandu. La Kumari risiede nel Kumari Ghar (Tempio di Kumari) in Piazza Kathmandu Durbar, e la sua presenza è considerata una parte essenziale del tessuto spirituale e culturale della città.
Hanuman Dhoka Palace, situato nel cuore di Kathmandu Durbar Square, è un complesso di palazzi storici che fu la sede reale dei re Malla e successivamente della dinastia Shah. Il suo nome deriva dalla vicina statua del dio scimmia Hanuman, che si ritiene protegga la famiglia reale. Il complesso del palazzo, che risale al XVI secolo, è costituito da diversi edifici, cortili, templi e santuari. I did a free walking tour in Kathmandu with Santosh and really enjoyed it. He’s a knowledgeable and friendly guide who explains the city’s history in a clear and engaging way. While in Nepal my boyfriend and I did the Kathmandu Durbar Square Tour with Amazing Kathmandu Tours. Our tour guide was Santosh and he was fantastic! We walked from Thamel to Kathmandu Durbar Square first stopping at Seto Machindranath Temple. We then walked through several interesting areas, learning about the history of Nepal and the various religions and cultures, eventually arriving at Kathmandu Dubar Square. Santosh gave us a tour of the Hanuman Dhoka (Old Royal Palace), and the Kumari Ghar in hopes of seeing the Kumari herself (she did not show herself that day). We also walked past Freak Street, saw Kaal Bhairab, and walked around the Handicraft market. On the way back, we stopped at the Naradevi Temple and the Vaisha Dev Shrine, also known as the toothache tree, where people nail rupees to the tree in hopes of curing their tooth pain. We were looking for a tour with a small group (we lucked out and it was only the two of us), where we could learn a lot about the area and the history and culture of Nepal. This tour was perfect, long enough to learn a lot, but short enough to so some other adventures that day. As I hoped, Santosh taught us a lot about things we would have never learned. I especially liked learning about the fish in Asan, the tradition of hanging up images of snakes, and the religious imagery. I highly recommend taking a tour with Amazing Kathmandu Tours while in Kathmandu!

Santosh was extremely helpful from the very beginning. He gave me great advice on how to get around Kathmandu and even about trekking in Nepal. He took me through parts of the city I wouldn’t have explored on my own and assisted me with practical things like tickets for Durbar Square, a SIM card, and buses to Pokhara.
