Santa Sofia, ufficialmente la Grande Moschea di Santa Sofia, è una moschea e un importante sito culturale e storico di Istanbul, in Turchia. In precedenza era una chiesa (360–1453) e un museo (1935–2020). Ultimo di tre edifici ecclesiastici ad essere eretto successivamente sul sito dall'Impero romano d'Oriente, fu completato nel 537 d.C., diventando il più grande spazio interno del mondo e tra i primi ad impiegare una cupola completamente pendente. È considerato l'epitome dell'architettura bizantina e si dice che abbia "cambiato la storia dell'architettura". Dalla sua dedicazione nel 360 fino al 1453, Santa Sofia servì come cattedrale di Costantinopoli nella tradizione liturgica bizantina, ad eccezione del periodo 1204-1261, quando i crociati latini installarono una propria gerarchia. Dopo la caduta di Costantinopoli nel 1453, servì come moschea, avendo i suoi minareti aggiunti subito dopo. Il sito è diventato un museo nel 1935, ed è stato ridesignato come moschea nel 2020.

A very interesting tour which covers all the important parts of the old town of Istanbul. Can our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and great fun. He was happy to answer any questions and made sure everyone in the group was involved. The tour was very interactive and overall a great day!

Our guide Aca gave us detailed information of the different churches we visited, was thoughtful about bathroom visits and was very friendly with great English
