Sunrise and Bike Tour

This was a memorable experience. Thanks to our tour guide John for a special and safe day. We had to be in the office by 3am, which was the toughest part but we'll worth it. Dress with extra layers since above the clouds ifelt like 20 degrees 🥶 and they provide you with gear. The shuttle brought a crew of us 10,000 ft up the volcano. We waited for the breathtaking sunrise. After, shuttle brought us down about 6700 ft and from there prepped us with the mountain bikes and our safety. The ride down the curvy hills were a lot of fun with an adrenaline. We stopped for breakfast at the local down town too. Even the forest rain on us felt great. Loved our experience ❤️ Mahalo!

Worth it and then some…

The self-guided (read: no guided) tour was so fun. John (our driver from pickup to the summit) was a riot, but also very knowledgeable about the land and its history. The bikes were solid and the views were breathtakingly beautiful. My 17yr old and I enjoyed the bonding experience. Would highly recommend. We drove ourselves to and from the main location, and were glad not to pay extra to get picked up/dropped off.

Overall a pretty good experience.

Overall experience was really good. Check-in at the bike area was a little chaotic but went okay except they ran out of backpacks. We did not bring one as that was something they listed that was provided. They were not offering to find another option for our family then at the last minute our driver, Dan found 2 we could use. It was a very helpful as we would have had no way to carry the layers of clothes you shed as you go down the mountain. The ride up was of course early and our driver gave us a lot of information about the history of Haleakalā amd Maui in general. All interesting information from what I can remember, most of us weren’t quite awake. You don’t get much time at the summit once the sun was up, 10 minutes and he wanted us back in the bus. The biking down the mountain was fun. Bikes functioned fine. The only bummer was, they had to pick you up halfway down and bus you through a town that doesn’t allow you to ride through it anymore and then let you back out to finish your ride. We missed out on some neat area to ride. It is unfortunate that town has made that law because it really does take away from your bike ride.

Great Experience/New Restrictions on the Bike Ride

The guide/driver and bikes were first rate. We had clouds at the top that were just the risk you take when doing an adventure in nature. The one thing that is not clear in the activity description is that both the National Park and a community on the upper part of the return trip are closed to bicycles. The ride down is in two sections and only about 14 miles on the bike, not the 30 miles available in the past. Again, Maui Bikes did all they could to make the ride as long and enjoyable as possible, but a bit of a disappointment from the old continuous ride down from the summit. All in all a great experience, would recommend.

Great Experience

We had a great time on this tour! Getting to see the sunrise was amazing. Our tour guide was wonderful and even was patient enough to let my husband make a purchase in the visitor center. I gave this experience 4 stars due to things not in our tour guide’s control. You aren’t able to actually bike the whole way down Haleakalā. They bus you from the top a little ways down the volcano, then you bike for a stretch down the volcano. Then, you have to hop back on the bus and the bus drives you for a few miles through a residential area. Apparently, a few years ago the residents in this stretch of the ride complained about the amount of bike traffic, so now their HOA prohibits tour groups from biking through this several mile stretch. After this stretch, you are dropped off again and bike the rest of the way back to the shop. Just something to be aware of. Also, some of the roads you bike towards the end are pretty heavily trafficked, so if that makes you nervous as a biker, just be aware! Overall, this was a great experience and we would recommend it!!

Faulty Bike almost lead to crash

I had a terrible experience with this bike ride and would not recommend it. The tour guides were fine. Transportation cold and I had to add layers, which would have been fine without the other issues. After the bike ride started, when I was going about 30-40mph going downhill, my bike started wobbling and would not stop. At this speed you could DIE OR BECOME SERIOUSLY INJURED if you crash like this. I am a somewhat experienced cyclist and have cycled a lot in the alps, and I believe this is the only reason I was able to prevent a terrible fall from happening. Imagine going that fast and having your bike's front tire start wobbling uncontrollably and trying to stop? If this would have happened to someone with less experience it would have been a disaster. People have died cycling this route -- it is a risk. The rest of the ride was stressful and not enjoyable because I had to make sure I was under a certain speed. The guide said that the shocks were broken and gave me another bike which seemed fine, but come on guys, you should have provided a refund for that experience. I am not the type of person to raise demand anything or cause a scene, but this was just bad customer service. I def learned to not trust rentals being maintained properly after this. I trust my bike, but who knows what kind of maintenance someone else's bike has received. The last part of the bike ride was also terrible. I have no idea why there isn't a proper bike lane on the stretch of road going through town but the ENTIRE way drivers were honking and riding our butts for the last 3 miles. I wish they would have just ended the trip before we got into town and driven us back because I didn't gain anything from that experience.

Risposta dell'operatore

Aloha, thank you for sharing your experience. It's quite a unique one. Bikers average 15 mph on this ride, often way less in the winding parts of the road. Our guidelines emphasize riding at a safe speed, and even considering the nature of this ride to reach 40 mph is really.....quite amazing, in the fact that it is practically unheard of really. Though if you are able to reach those speeds it doesn't surprise me that speed wobbles could be felt. The science of speed wobbles is interesting and simple. When looking at extreme sports like motoGP or downhill skateboarding, speed wobbles can be a natural occurrence because at those top speeds, even the the slightest of variation in your steering can contribute to increasingly uncontrollable wobbles, especially as one tries to compensate for the steering. At slower more manageable speeds, speed wobbles are hardly noticeable and easily corrected. That's why our guidelines emphasize maintaining a safe manageable speed. Shocks aren't necessary on this paved road and would play no difference in the bikes performance on the smooth pavement. And we do have multiple full time mechanics and a wonderful mountain crew who inspect every bike both before AND after every trip. Thank you for the opportunity to share these things with others who may be reading. I'm sorry that you had this experience, please give us a call and we can discuss that experience.

Amazing View

John was an amazing guide and we would recommend the excursion. The only advice is to dress warm for the sunrise. The pants and gloves were not available - only the windbreaker jackets which is why we gave 4 stars.
