La nostra Guida accreditata vi accompagnerà nei vari Punti di Interesse e Edifici Iconici intorno alla Piazza. . La prima tappa del percorso è il John F Kennedy Memorial Visitiamo siti storici tra cui la vecchia Porta Browne e la Fontana del Quin-centenario e parliamo dei 14 - Tribes banner
Sbuchiamo ora su Williams-gate St. e incontriamo alcuni edifici storici tra cui l'elegante edificio Browne Thomas. Passiamo anche dalle gioiellerie specializzate nell'anello Claddagh di Galway. se il tempo lo permette ci fermiamo alla statua di Oscar Wilde, un regalo dell'Estonia all'Irlanda nel 2004!
Ora deviamo lungo Eglinton Street e passiamo accanto alla chiesa del convento francescano sulla sinistra. Questa vecchia chiesa ha un piccolo cimitero sul retro che era un importante luogo di sepoltura tra la metà del XVII e l'inizio del XVIII secolo.
Continuiamo verso Courthouse Square, che aveva due iconici tribunali: uno per la contea e uno per la città. Uno rimane oggi e il Teatro Comunale è di fronte.
Più avanti, dal ponte pedonale di nuova costruzione sul fiume Corrib, il nostro gruppo si fermerà per vedere la più nuova cattedrale in pietra d'Europa, la cattedrale di Galway e la cappella francescana.
Il nostro percorso turistico passa vicino a Bowling Green. Qui c'era la casa di famiglia della signora Nora Barnacle, che negli anni passati era un'importante galvegese. Ha notoriamente frequentato lo scrittore irlandese James Joyce il 16 giugno 1904, da allora in poi noto come Bloomsday!
Il tour ritorna attraverso il famoso River Walk di Galway fino all'arteria principale della città. Arriviamo a un incrocio di due strade e all'iconico edificio del Lynch's Castle. Questo edificio è il più bel castello cittadino sopravvissuto in Irlanda. Il potente clan Lynch una volta lo possedeva. La tua guida spiega la storia dell'edificio, i suoi stemmi e tondi.
Il tour continua girando a destra in Church Lane, una volta chiamata "Dead Man's Lane", dove i funerali passavano nel vecchio cimitero. Parliamo del sagrato della chiesa di San Nicola e proseguiamo attraverso Market St.
Arriviamo alla Collegiata di San Nicola accompagnati dalla vostra guida. Spiega la storia di questa più grande chiesa medievale in uso continuo in Irlanda. Originariamente fu costruita come chiesa cattolica ma, oggi, funziona come chiesa protestante. Si dice che nel 1477 Cristoforo Colombo abbia adorato qui prima del suo epico viaggio di scoperta! C'è anche molto da vedere all'interno di questo antico edificio e offriamo biglietti scontati per partecipare alle visite guidate che operano dal lunedì al venerdì. 11:00 e 14:00 e mercoledì 12:00 e 15:00.
La finestra del Lynch Memorial, eretta nel 1854, è ricca di leggende. Si dice che il sindaco di Galway, il sindaco Lynch, abbia impiccato suo figlio in questo luogo!
Arriviamo in High Street, una sezione del Quartiere Latino di Galway e incontriamo l'iconico King's Head Pub. La leggenda narra che questo sito di pub sia stato donato da Oliver Cromwell come pagamento al boia del re Carlo I. Sempre su questa strada passiamo davanti alla famosa Naughton House, un tempo di proprietà di "Humanity" Dick Martyn, un deputato irlandese al parlamento britannico.
Laureati universitari hanno fondato l'ormai famosa Druid Theatre Company nel 1975 in questa città di cultura. Druid ha sempre mantenuto un rapporto vitale con gli scrittori, Tom Murphy e Martin McDonough. Molti noti attori e registi irlandesi hanno lavorato con la compagnia nel corso degli anni.
Il famoso Arco Spagnolo è adiacente all'area open-space, conosciuta come la Parata Spagnola . Questa zona un tempo comprendeva il vecchio porto di Galway fino al 1840. Le vecchie navi Gallerie arrivavano qui dalla Spagna con vini e spezie per le famiglie di mercanti locali. Spieghiamo anche il significato dell'Arco Spagnolo.
Il tour ora torna indietro verso il vecchio sito medievale: la Sala del Conte Rosso. Un tempo era la residenza del castello del potente normanno Richard de Burgo. Fu un edificio importante fino alla fine del XVI secolo. Le sue rovine erano andate perdute per secoli finché gli archeologi non l'hanno scoperto alla fine degli anni '90.
La guida spiegherà che l'Ordine degli Agostiniani arrivò a Galway nel 1500 e stabilì un'abbazia nel Forthil. L'esercito inglese di Oliver Cromwell li bandì per un periodo, ma tornarono nel 1760 e stabilirono questo edificio.
Le tappe finali del nostro tour della città ci portano su Middle Street, dove passiamo per An Taibhdhearc. Questo è l'unico teatro irlandese in lingua irlandese. È stato istituito come progetto culturale su larga scala all'inizio del 1920, quando l'Irlanda divenne uno Stato libero. Micheal MacLiamor, il primo direttore/manager vi lavorò dal 1928.
La nostra ultima tappa sarà l'ex Cathedral Building a Middle St. / Abbeygate St. Galway. Questo vecchio edificio è stato utilizzato per molti secoli ma è stato ritenuto inadeguato dal vescovo di Galway, il dottor Michael Browne nel 1957.

My husband and I took a 2 hour walking tour of Galway and saw everything. We were very interested in learning the history as both our family names were members of the 14 original tribes of Galway. Gerard, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure we saw everything and had a good experience. I highly recommend

Gerard was wonderful!! He called early before our tour and suggested we move the time a little later as the rain was due to stop. Right on cue, the tour started and rain stopped. Gerard was excellent introducing us to the new and old Galway and told us some interesting Irish facts that we hadn’t heard before. A wonderful informative walk on a soft Irish day 😄. Thanks Gerard!

The tour with Gerard was very nice and informative. While Galway was very busy it is a cool historic city. We learned a lot. We also had plenty of time the rest of the day to take in what the city offers in food, drink and shopping.

Ger is brilliant! The tour was really good and he gave us lots of facts, some of which I didn't know! It's not my first time in Galway, however Ger still took me to places I had not been before, and gave me information about every location. He knows his facts very well and made the tour interactive, answering all of our questions about the city and its history. I would definitely recommend it, especially due to his friendliness and knowledge!

We really enjoyed our tour of Galway with Ger. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and fun. We learned a lot about this history of Galway and of Ireland as a whole while we strolled the streets of the city. Gerrard helped us understand Galway’s complex and interesting history. Highlights included the stories behind important buildings and architectural details, notable restaurants and pubs, and written Gaelic words on prominent shops. We learned a lot, and enjoyed discussing our (and Gerard’s) family roots.

Galway was named the European Region of Gastronomy in 2018 and the European Capital of Culture in 2022. We were paired with another couple despite signing up for a private tour (the explanation was that the agency was short on guides). Our guide, Gerard, seemed inexperienced and often was lacking in-depth knowledge about the sites we visited. He sometimes stopped in places that seemed ill-advised (e.g., narrow sidewalks where we were blocking foot traffic). He sometimes seemed impatient with us when we wanted to stop longer at a particular location.
Hello GotNoMansion, You did not post this under Booking name but are assuming you were with us this week. We appreciate your business and thanks for taking the time to leave this review. All feedback is important to our Tour Guiding service, be it positive or negative, as in this case. I would like to apologize for any shortfalls you encountered while with us. You rightly said that you expected a private Tour but ultimately had to share with another couple. This is a valid point and in this case my guiding colleague rang me at short notice stating that she was unwell and was unavailable to work that morning. I was unable to find a replacement guide at short notice and I myself explained this situation before the start of this particular tour. To solve this issue for future travellers, I have asked Guides who work with us to make sure Western Tours and Tales (WTT) receive at least 4hrs. notice if they are assigned but unavailable to work at a particular tour. I have over seven years experience of guiding Tourists both on City walking tours, Riverboat sightseeing cruises and Celtic Revival tour and am not quite sure how you found me ‘inexperienced’. I do ask at regular intervals if guests any questions on the interesting content and if there’s no follow-up, we move on to the next attraction – during this particular tour, I do not remember you asking any relevant question on my content! You were visiting a city, some of who’s landmarks and medieval buildings are indeed on narrow and busy streets. At times these locations need to be carefully navigated which we advise our guests about . I do hope you enjoyed the remainder of your stay in Ireland’s mid-West.
