A 10/10 experience. Notes.
Well, this was a total no-show from the event organiser..I booked this event way ahead on Viator. Unlike other tours I go on I had zero communication ahead of this event. Viator had already taken the money for the tickets and issued the vouchers with the meeting point. I messaged the organiser a few hours ahead to check it was still happening but no response. As I had no communication stating the event was cancelled we decided to take a taxi to the meeting point. After nearly 25 minutes of waiting we had to get another taxi back. Complete waste of time and taxi money!! Will be contacting Viator to at least try and recoup the voucher money..
Your visit was booked for today at 12h30am, it’s 6h37pm now in Brazil, and I did respond to your message. You were my only client for the day, so I chose to refund your payment. There was no need for a bad-faith review.
I was confident that I would like it, but I exceeded all my expectations even more
I don’t know if these ‘experiences’ even happen, although there are reviews that indicate they do, however all I can provide is my experience. My partner and I were really looking forward to an experience that we never thought we would be able to have in our lifetimes and were really excited about the chance to attend a Baile Funk party in Rochina. We booked our two places and on the afternoon of the event received a message through Tripadvisor with very clear details on expectations and where to meet at 00:30 that night. The message also included details of a Brazilian number for WhatsApp contact. Nowhere in this message did it indicate that we were supposed to reply back in any way whatsoever. We arrived at the designated meeting point, Metro Station, Exit A at Rochina at midnight and by 00:30, there was nobody else there waiting, so I sent a message to the WhatsApp number asking if it was still going ahead. There was no reply. By the time it got to 01:00, it was very clear that nobody was going to arrive, so I sent another message to the number saying that I was leaving and not happy. Again, there was no reply. It comes to 6 in the morning and a flurry of broken WhatsApp messages from the Brazilian number start coming in that neither acknowledge that we were waiting fruitlessly at the bottom of a favela in the middle of the night nor any apology whatsoever. We had wasted a full night as well as taxi fares to and from Rochina (the Metro only runs until midnight). I asked if the experience was indeed ‘cancelled’, but this was not acknowledged and at one point in the messages he even said ‘but the tour happened, bro’….erm, no, I was there, nobody else was. I requested a refund, but over the course of 2hours of messages, it was made very clear that he wanted to put us on another tour and was reluctant to refund. The messages rambled on about how ‘it’s not fair’ and how he had advance costs to pay. After 2hrs I finally did get a refund. Anyway, why didn’t I get any replies to my messages at 00:30? He admitted that he was LIVING IN LONDON….YES, 6,000 miles away, with a 3 hour time difference, so he would have likely been sleeping whilst we were standing wasting our time and money at a Metro Station in Rochina!!!! Without a doubt the most amateurish and childish experience I have ever had in my adult life. No doubt there will be a reply to this review where it is everybody else’s fault but his, as he has done with the other negative reviews, but believe me, I lived it and wished I hadn’t. Simple advice – AVOID!!
Hi, There First of all, I genuinely want to say I’m sorry that your experience didn’t go as expected. That is never the standard we aim to deliver. Our Baile Funk experience does happen weekly and is led by local guides who are residents of Rocinha. I currently manage the business from London, but I have a trusted team on the ground who operate the tours directly inside the community. Because of the time difference (3 hours ahead in Brazil), we always ask guests to confirm their attendance via WhatsApp after receiving the detailed message. This allows us to create the group chat with the assigned guide and ensure smooth coordination on the night. Many platforms such as TripAdvisor and Viator do not always notify us in real-time, which is why WhatsApp confirmation is essential. On this occasion, it seems there was a communication breakdown regarding the confirmation step. For that, I take responsibility. The tour did operate that night with confirmed participants, which is why my team initially believed everything was proceeding as scheduled. However, if you were at the meeting point and unable to connect with the guide, I completely understand your frustration especially given the late hour. I appreciate that you eventually accepted the refund, and although we offered to reschedule, we respect your decision. We are continuously improving our communication process to avoid situations like this in the future, including creating WhatsApp groups in advance so guests can directly contact the assigned guide even while I’m offline. The host never responded despite my attempts to contact and call him. I was alone at night in a dangerous area. Was a terrible experience.
Sorry, I really got sick. I could not move my body and the meeting point it’s not dangerous. But anyway, I’m sorry for not go. My friend send me a message saying he would take care of you because he knew it something wrong happened with me. I don’t miss tours, just when I’m sick for real
What an experience this was! My sister and I visited Rio and for the love for music decided to visit a Baile Funk through Alex’s establishment. We knew it would be so much fun but this night exceeded our expectations! We were paired with Junior as our tour guide and what happened that night cannot be put into words to describe it accurately. The music was absolutely phenomenal, the culture and the talent coming out of Rocinha.. just wow! We felt very safe, the people are beyond kind, just be ready to dance and make new friends and bring good vibes ❤️ At first I was dancing like an American but a lovely woman showed me the Brazilian way🫡
Great evenings, the guide was very kind and very attentive! Some even speak a little French! Really a crazy atmosphere in a great setting I highly recommend it is an incredible experience!!!
This is a great experience and I recommend you go if you have the opportunity. Its good for people to get a first hand look at how beautiful the favelas are and the Baile Funk party is a high energy fun experience you wont regret.
Tour operator didn’t show up or send any communications. Waste of time and money. Please book another company.
Hi, I’m really sorry for your experience. I want to clarify that during my illness, I paid other guides from my team so the tours could continue normally. The visit did happen with the substitute guide. I always send all instructions for the baile funk and all tours, but clients also need to reach out if they haven’t received something, I can’t guess what information you’re missing. It seems we had a communication gap, and for that, I sincerely apologize. Please also consider that I have many reviews from travelers who speak about my professionalism, my kindness, and the quality of my work. So I kindly ask you not to be unfair by telling others to look for another company. Of course, everyone is free to choose any operator, but your comment was unfortunately very harsh and does not reflect the usual experience with my service. My health had to come first at that moment, but I never leave clients without support, and I always work hard to deliver the best experience. Thank you for your understanding.
I was not able to attend this event, however, Alex was still extremely communicative and understanding. I still would recommend this tour.
