Il Tempio di Ekambareswarar, situato a Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, è uno dei più antichi e venerati templi Shiva in India. Dedicato a Lord Shiva come Ekambaranathar, presenta una splendida architettura dravidica, con un torreggiante gopuram (porta d'ingresso) e sculture intricate. Il tempio è rinomato per il suo sacro albero di mango, che si ritiene abbia più di 3.500 anni, e riveste un grande significato nel culto shaivita. È un luogo di pellegrinaggio chiave, che attira devoti e turisti.
Il tempio di Kailasanathar, situato a Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, è uno dei primi esempi di architettura dravidica, risalente all'VIII secolo. Dedicato a Lord Shiva, questo tempio è notevole per le sue splendide incisioni intricate e l'atmosfera serena. Il complesso del tempio presenta una serie di piccoli santuari, una struttura unica in arenaria e bellissime sculture raffiguranti varie divinità e scene mitologiche. Radunati insieme all'estremità meridionale di Mamallapuram, i Cinque Ratha erano, sorprendentemente, tutti scolpiti da singole grandi rocce. Ognuno di questi bei templi del VII secolo era dedicato a un dio indù e ora prende il nome da uno o più dei Pandava, i cinque fratelli-eroi dell'epico Mahabharata, o dalla loro moglie comune, Draupadi. I ratti erano nascosti nella sabbia fino a quando non furono scavati dagli inglesi 200 anni fa. Ratha è sanscrito per 'carro', e può riferirsi alla forma dei templi o alla loro funzione di veicoli per gli dei. Si pensa che originariamente non servissero come luoghi di culto, ma come modelli architettonici.
Visitiamo anche la Penitenza di Arjuna, un bassorilievo di 100 piedi x 45 piedi dove è stato scolpito un intero capolavoro dell'epopea del Mahabharata.
La tappa successiva è al Krishna’s Butterball, una curiosa vista di un masso a forma di palla di 5 metri di diametro che è arroccato precariamente su un pendio e sfida le leggi di gravità di Newton!
In piedi come un magnifico pugno di eleganza scavata nella roccia a picco sul mare, circondato da giardini e corti in rovina, il Tempio della Riva a due torri simboleggia le altezze dell'architettura Pallava e le ambizioni marittime dei re Pallava. Le sue piccole dimensioni smentiscono le sue eccellenti proporzioni e la suprema qualità degli intagli, molti ormai erosi in abbellimenti vagamente impressionisti. Costruito sotto Narasimhavarman II nell'VIII secolo, è il primo tempio in pietra indipendente significativo del Tamil Nadu.
