Questo tour inizia quando lasci il porto di scalo ed entri nell'autostrada Panamericana. Si arriva alla strada per Monteverde. I discendenti dei Quaccheri originali che arrivarono qui negli anni '50, decisero di proteggere il loro paradiso dal turismo di massa non aprendo le strade che accedevano alla regione. In un paese e un'area in cui le piogge battenti trasformano la polvere in fango in un batter d'occhio, questa difesa ha funzionato per molti anni.

We booked this shore excursion with Gio Tours through Trip Advisor / Viator to coincide with our cruise ship's day in port, as we particularly wanted to see Monteverde's Cloud Forest and based upon the reviews on this site. Despite a slight change to the itinerary (more on which below), we had a very enjoyable day and Charlie (our guide) and Christian (our bus driver) were both excellent. We had no problems finding our guide (and the mini-bus/coach) at the end of the cruise pier (in Puntarenas) and prior communication with Gio Tours (to organise port collection etc) was helpful and prompt. We were in a very small group (6), which made the explanation from Charlie of the flora and fauna along the trail (at Skywalk park) much easier. He gave is lots of information and the suspension bridges are impressive, if a little wobbly! As other guests have commented, the journey from the port to Monteverde is relatively long (about 1hr 45 mins) (and not all on paved roads - so be prepared for some bumps), but the Gio Tours mini-bus was very clean and the scenery impressive (particularly looking back down into the valleys once above the clouds), plus Charlie provided lots of commentary - so we enjoyed and saw as part of the overall experience. Unfortunately, the coffee tasting aspect of our shore excursion had to be cancelled (? due to fertiliser spreading at the coffee plantation), but Gio Tours substituted in a visit to a butterfly farm (Jardin de Mariposas at Monteverde), which I found interesting, but which Sarah chose to sit out (as she has a phobia). Nonetheless, she did get a personal tour of their insect collection (including some that could only be seen under UV light) - so an effort was made to ensure she got something from this part of the day. As an observation (for those going to see wildlife), we didn't see that much wildlife within the Skywalk (save butterflies, colourful insects and birds) (Charlie explaining that the animals prefer the quieter parts of Monteverde; note there are also several ziplines at the park) but the bus did stop when Charlie spotted some monkeys on the journey to Monteverde - allowing us all to take photos. Overall, we felt the tour was a great way to get a flavour for the natural beauty of Costa Rica, and we are now thinking of returning in the future (for a land tour).

Juan is amazing guide. His knowledge and passion for his country and tourism may the experience a must do. The swinging bridges are a great place for one of a kind photos. We saw monkeys birds and even a tarantula

Tour guide was very good and friendly.Kept us informed at all times. Cruise change departure time so coffee tour had to be skipped but not the tour guides fault

Well they canceled the trip less than 24 hours before, the reason was I didn’t specify a pick up location. My hotel wasn’t in their list, and I did write that I would go to them as I have a car. More than that, no one bothered to message and ask such a trivial question. Also as I tried to go and rebook the trip right after the cancellation, there are no spots. So go figure
Dear Mariana, We are very sorry that this situation went this way, as we tried to contact you several times, including through Customer Care of Viator. From the very first day that you scheduled the tour, we used the official messaging system from the Viator Booking website to ask if you were staying in Monteverde or in another area to schedule your pickup. We also messaged you a few more times within the next few days without any response. We contacted Customer Care, and they just advised us that they had fully refunded the tour, even though we requested them to contact you to ask for more information about the meeting point and that if no response was given, we were going to need to cancel the tour. Since no information was provided of your pickup location and you did not use the official messaging system of Viator to contact us, we had no idea you had a car or wanted to meet us on the way. We are a service provider, not a destination. Our tours include transportation with a driver and a bilingual tour guide who is meeting you at the pickup location of your choice. Since we had no information whatsoever of where we were meeting you and all our attempts to contact you were unsuccessful, we canceled the tour as there was no place for our driver and a tour guide to meet our guests and provide the tour to. Then again, we apologize for the inconvenience of this whole situation, but we used all the official mediums to contact you, and without a response from you, there was no way for us to perform this tour. Excellent tour, very good guide and driver. They went above and beyond to make it memorable. The swinging bridges of the cloud forest provide a great view of the jungle. The coffee/chocolate tour was also great. It is a longer drive to get to the forest and back, but worth it.

Juan and Charlie were amazing. They went above and beyond when the traffic was stopped due to an accident. We made the ship but would not have if it weren’t for these two.

Juan Pablo was an excellent tour guide. At the coffee plantation we learned all about CR coffee and found out we're brewing it all wrong! Lunch buffet was fabulous. Highly recommended. You must be able to walk uphill at elevation.

This was a delightful day. They were very easy to find at the pier. We found Juan the guide to be friendly and informative, and fun! Charlie was friendly and helpful and a great driver. We loved the Monteverde Cloud Forest tour, found it to be very worthwhile. Beautiful, a great nature connection, and a great way to spend the time. For the coffee tour we experienced sugar coming out of sugarcane, and cocoa beans made into chocolate. And saw coffee beans and roasting and had coffee and hot chocolate samples. Everybody in my group agreed this was a great day. We recommend it and Gio Tours.
