Itinerario

Ingresso incluso

Fascinating museum

Small but very interesting museum highlighting life in East Berlin and East Germany from 1945 to their demise in 1989 and 1990. There are many fascinating exhibits and photos. It's quite crowded inside (it was good to see lots of teens and young adults). I purchased a ticket in advance, but buying a ticket on arrival seemed easy. Very nice museum.

Thank you very much for your visit and your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the exhibition, discovered many fascinating exhibits and appreciated our interactive approach to presenting the history of the GDR. It’s also lovely to hear that you enjoyed seeing so many young people engaging with history. As a museum with a strong educational mission, that is something we value greatly. We hope to welcome you back to the DDR Museum on your next visit to Berlin.

Good introduction to the history of DDR

Really enjoyed this little gem. Plenty of interactive items and plenty of information I didn't already know. History was very well balanced. Layout was a bit awkward and it meant I maybe didn't see everything or get to spend as much time as I would have liked on some exhibits, but a definite for the first time visitor to Berlin.

Risposta dell'operatore

Thank you very much for your visit and the wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the interactive exhibition, discovered new aspects of the GDR’s history and found the presentation to be well balanced. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the layout. The exhibition is intentionally designed without a fixed route, allowing visitors to explore the different themes at their own pace. We understand, however, that this can sometimes make it feel as though you might have missed something. We hope to welcome you back to the DDR Museum on your next visit to Berlin.

great interactive museum

excellent interactive museum, very hands on. the replica of an East German flat was definitely a highlight !!!! information is quite disorganised though & the layout is a little confusing.

Risposta dell'operatore

Thank you very much for your visit and the lovely review, Amber! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the interactive concept of the exhibition and that the reconstructed East German flat was a highlight of your visit. The exhibition is intentionally designed to be explored freely rather than along a fixed route, but we appreciate your feedback on the layout. We hope to welcome you back to the DDR Museum one day!

Great experience

A fantastic, interactive and informative exhibit of life in GDR Germany and the divide between East and West. The Stassi interrogation wasn’t what I was expecting (I was under the impression that there would be actors/ role playing involved, but it was a recorded one in German that you can listen to in an eerie setting). I would strongly recommend this to anyone who likes their history and is hungry for knowledge. Take your time to go around all the exhibits as there is so much for everyone to learn!

A fabulous experience!

Just fabulous. Very informative, organised and interactive. Felt quite emotional reflecting on the history of the DDR and reintegration from 1990. Very pleased that this museum exists and that it is such a good one. One of the highlights of the trip so far!

Disappointed

Totally disorganised and badly planned. When you enter you’re confronted with many layered lift the flap exhibits hat end up in frustrating queues to view while you block others out. The room set ups were interesting but the whole experience was disappointing

Risposta dell'operatore

Thank you for your visit and your feedback. We’re pleased to hear that you found the reconstructed rooms interesting, but we regret that the overall experience did not meet your expectations and resulted in a one-star rating. The exhibition is intentionally designed without a fixed route. Rather than following a prescribed path, visitors are invited to explore the different themes of life in the GDR freely and at their own pace. Likewise, the doors, drawers and cupboards are a deliberate part of our interactive concept, encouraging visitors to discover the exhibition for themselves. We also regret that the level of crowding affected your visit. The DDR Museum can indeed get quite busy at certain times, even though we regulate visitor numbers. During busier periods, our interactive concept can make this more noticeable than in a traditional museum. For a quieter visit, we recommend coming in the evening. That’s why we’ve extended our opening hours, and the museum is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm.

A good museum

A good interactive museum experience with lots to see and plenty of history and information with good recreated rooms. It can get quite busy but thankfully not too overcrowded. The weather was hot and inside the museum was extremely warm. Staff were friendly and it’s a place I’d recommend to people. Visited with my partner July 2025

Thank you very much for your visit and your lovely feedback, David! Last year, we unfortunately experienced some issues with the air conditioning. These have been resolved, and our exhibition rooms are now fully climate-controlled. We hope to welcome you back to the DDR Museum one day.

Decent Museum

A decent museum except that there was no guidance at all where to start/finish. Wandering museums are fine but still need some direction. They have missed an opportunity by leaving the car open to people taking up HUGE amounts of time without giving others a chance. Would've been nice to have staff there for photo ops and to move people along. The apartment was brilliantly set out with things to explore. Really showed you what it was like.

Risposta dell'operatore

Thank you for your visit and the four-star rating! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed exploring the reconstructed flat and that it gave you a good impression of everyday life in the GDR. Thank you also for your feedback regarding the Trabant simulator. The driving experience is deliberately limited to around three minutes so that as many visitors as possible have the opportunity to try it. You're right – rather than having a member of staff supervising the simulator, we rely on visitors showing consideration for one another so that everyone has the chance to enjoy the experience. We hope to welcome you back to the DDR Museum one day.

Interactive museum about life in the DDR

So much history of life in the DDR. Fun way to learn about life in a society backed area. It was crowded and I understand why. Highly interactive.

Thank you very much for your visit and your lovely review! We are delighted about the 5 stars and hope to see you again one day.

Crowded, chaotic and smelled really bad

We were expecting a much better experience from the DDR museum, but from the beginning it didn't really live up to our expectations. Firstly there was an awful smell, like backed up toilets, that you couldn't escape. Secondly there were far too many people inside, some with wheeled suitcases (!) that made it very difficult for others to get close to some exhibits (there are lockers for your belongings so I'm not sure why they were allowed a suitcase inside). Finally, there didn't seem to be any logical order to the displays - each display seemed to be completely unrelated to the next, and then you enter the recreated apartment which felt really unauthentic and plasticky. Maybe we are not the target audience for this museum.

Risposta dell'operatore

Thank you for your visit and for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations and that this resulted in a two-star rating. If there was an unpleasant smell during your visit, we sincerely apologise. This certainly does not reflect the standard we aim to provide. If you could let us know when and where you noticed it by emailing bewertung@ddr-museum.de, we would be happy to investigate further. The exhibition is intentionally designed without a fixed route. Rather than following a prescribed path, visitors are invited to explore the different themes of life in the GDR freely and at their own pace. Likewise, the reconstructed flat is based on typical East German interiors and has only been adapted in a few areas to provide sufficient space for both guided tours and individual visitors. We also regret that the level of crowding affected your visit. The DDR Museum can indeed get quite busy at certain times, especially on weekends and during school holidays, even though we regulate visitor numbers. To experience the exhibition in a calmer atmosphere, we recommend visiting in the evening hours. For that reason, we’ve extended our opening hours and are open daily from 9 am to 9 pm.
