Descrizione

Civita di Bagnoregio is a magical, surreal, fantastic place located on top of a tuff hill that can only be reached by crossing a narrow pedestrian bridge. From there you can enjoy one of the most stunning panoramic views of the whole Lazio region. Nick-named "the town that is dying", due to the constant erosion of the tuff rocks where it is placed, this citadel half-way between Orvieto and Lake Bolsena has Etruscan and Medieval origins. Suspended in time and space, Civita di Bagnoregio is beyond doubt one of the most beautiful and characteristic Italian villages. On foggy days, this wonderful town seems literally suspended in mid-air... The wonderful village of Civita di Bagnoregio is today a very small town center where time seems to have stopped. As already mentioned, to get to the village of Civita you must cross the suspension bridge of 300 metres linking it to Bagnoregio. Arm yourself with a camera because at every step you will be faced with breath-taking views!

Known as "The Dying City", Civita di Bagnoregio has experienced a new life, in the last years. This small village on the border between Umbria and Lazio, is literally reborn. Considered one of the most beautiful in Italy, it has recorded more than 800 thousand visitors, every year. The real name, Bagnoregio - that seems to literally derive from Bagno del Re, as this place was once a health Spa – hosted the King of the Longboards Desiderio, who was seriously ill. Why is the city dying? It is because, this fabulous village, which is built on a hill of tuff, is continuously being eroded by two small torrents, by the rain and the wind. A nickname, that today is the legend of Civita di Bagnoregio, founded over 2500 years ago, by the Etruscan's, perfectly sums up the uniqueness of the landscape. Civita di Bagnoregio is one of those places, that is so picture-perfect, it’s hard to believe it’s real!

A lovely private tour

We had a lovely day with our guide Giuliana and our driver Roberto. We really wanted to see the dying city and not with a massive bus tour. Not a cheap trip but very personalised and we had as much time as we wanted at the city. Giuliana was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to spend the day with. Roberto drove us very safely through an insane storm on our return and we wee delivered safely back to our hotel. Highly recommend this tour if the price doesn’t put you off.

Our guide Roseana was very knowledgeable and friendly which made for a lovely experience. The views were spectacular, but it is quite the hike....both ways!

A city suspended in the sky

Amazing experience in an unusual place. We arrived in Civita and there was fog so the city seemed suspended on a cloud, a surreal image. The tour with our private guide was very interesting. Good organization. Highly recommended!

If you have no mobility issues this should be a must see!

Settled by the Etruscans 2500 years ago, it was largely abandoned in the 16th century following an earthquake. Our guide book made it sound as if no one lived there any more, which is not true! There are beautiful gardens, planters of blooming flowers and shrubs, plus you see people go in and out of domiciles. There are several restaurants and gift shops. Prices are very reasonable. Architecturally fascinating with beautiful vistas as well a amazing views of this hill town from your hiking starting point. Be aware not only of the incredibly steep hike and irregular pavement but an issue about parking. There are two parking lots at the starting point of your hike to Civita. There are automated machines from which you can get a ticket for your car. The tickets are €2 per hour. We had a lot of experience with these machines, but the two machines in the parking lot only gave us the week rate of €15, the weekly rate. We went to the smaller lot and the first machine we went to did the same thing. The last try was the machine outside the restrooms and finally we were able to get a 3 hour ticket for €6! I hope this is not intentional, but I am suspicious 😒
