Worth the drive

The drive is definitely not for the meek. Do not attempt it in a sedan ..ever. this is an SUV or truck road only. The views are amazing.

Worth every penny

This tour really fills up your day. It started at 6:30 am and I was returned to my lodgings in Fairbanks at midnight. It was amazing and the tour guide, Tim, was knowledgeable about everything, from the flora and the fauna we encountered on the way, to the histories of the Dalton highway, the oil pipeline, and human settlement in the areas. Tim drove us 200 miles to bring us to the start of the Arctic Circle, offered us many opportunities for restroom breaks, made multiple stops so that we could have opportunities for pictures at scenic stops like the Yukon River and Arctic tundra, and he even dug a hole in the ground so that we could experience the physical geography of the tundra firsthand, and really feel the permafrost layer that resides beneath the moistened topsoil. Wildlife sightings on my tour included ravens, Canadian jays, a porcupine, mama and baby moose (briefly), red squirrels, and snowshoe hares. The trip also consisted of beautiful views, among them being miles and miles of trees in every direction, which created the most incredible collage of shades of green that I have ever seen!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share with others about your experience. We do try to share with others it is a full day -- but oh so worth it. AND, we appreciate you are sharing that so they can hear from other travelers and not just us...we can be a bit biased (smile). We are so glad you enjoyed the time out with Tim and wish you safe travels!

Long tour, beautiful scenery.

This is a LONG tour, so make sure you are prepared for that. We had the tour at the beginning of the season, so nothing on route was open except the Yukon River camp, where we had ordered lunch and dinner. Our driver Tim was amazing! We got behind schedule and ended up having an 18 hour tour. Bring snacks and drinks for yourself. We enjoyed the tour, saw a few wildlife. Our driver dug down to let us touch permafrost which was really interesting, we stopped at the Denali Hwy sign, the Alaska pipeline, and the Arctic circle (which is just a sign , a few information boards and bathrooms) . It's a tour that is all about the scenery on the drive, not really the destination. So if you don't want to sit on a bus for 16+ hours to look at the beauty of Alaska, this tour isn't for you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share with others about your experience.....not to exceed expectations for those who travel in July .. BUT, to say the only thing open was the Yukon River Camp is true year round on the lower half of the Dalton Highway. Further north Coldfoot Camp is open year round but that is 60 miles NORTH of the Arctic Circle and not visited on the Arctic Circle Drive Adventure. We don't want future travelers to think there is a plethora of businesses along the route -- just miles and miles of wilderness! Again, thank you so much for joining us and for sharing your experience with others. Happy Travels!

On the Dalton Highway to the Arctic Circle

This experience was difficult to rate. What is easy to rate was our tour guide, Sabrina who under the most adverse physical conditions got us to the Arctic. Circle and returned us home safely, an absolute professional. For me this was a bucket list item to be accomplished while I was in the Fairbanks area in early September. So we start our tour understanding bathroom facilities for the most part with an exception at the Yukon river are outhouses. We had a stop at a site outside Fairbanks dedicated to dispensing information about the Trans Alaska pipeline with Sabrina providing additional information. Later during the trip Sabrina played an informative video about its construction. I did not and as a general rule wildlife sightings are rare in the course of the trip. Well the Dalton highway is 75% gravel road of its 389 mile length and weather had turned the highway into a quagmire so much so that a road grader was scraping the top 3 in of mud at the bottom of inclines so vehicles could get traction meanwhile a steady rain accompany us through most of out tour. The logistics went off without a hitch as both lunch and dinner orders at the Yukon river camp went smoothly. Unfortunately the inclement weather removed an opportunity to view either the Yukon river nor the area surrounding the Arctic Circle turn out / parking lot. We were very close to having to turn around like 10 mi from the Arctic circle. Fortunately the decision was made to go forward. Sabrina then in a steady rain had to put chains on the rear wheels for the return trip but at least it was ona hard asphalt surface, subsequently she had to remove the chains while operating in 3 in of mud and even with chains on it was touch and go for a 10 to 12 minute stretch to see if we could work our way up this incline under our own power. This trip is normally accomplished in 12 to 13 hours ours took 19 from 6AM Wed to 1AM Thurs.

Thank you for joining us and Sabrena on your Arctic Circle Adventure. Yes, this fall the road did give us muddy challanges. ALWAYS good for any guest to know about the gravel nature of the road and that weather (and then the time Dept of Transportation has to tackle it) will dictate how smooth...or rough, it is. And this fall was the worse we have seen. A reason we train our guides for the conditions and prepare them with the right equipment -- like chains for the mud (not just for snow and ice). Thank you again for joining Sabrena on your adventure.

Dave's Crew of Explorers

Alaska does Not control the Weather. It was raining and of course a muddy road the entire tour. Tour bus about half full. Stops along the highway were Awesome & colorful terrain, viewing the pipeline, even in the rain. The Yukon River stop/camp was so welcoming with delicious food. Narrative Dave spoke was Awesome, history shared. I was told to expect our seats to be rotated on 3 contacts with this Wonderful Tour, yet that option never happened. I would have Loved to experience 1 of the 4 coveted front row seats. We all paid the same money. However, I tipped well, although a traveler wanted to send a check. Really ? Please Plan Ahead. These folks work Very Hard. Many Thanks for this Experience.

Thank you so much for taking time to share your experience with others and with us. We are so glad you enjoyed your trip and that you understand weather will be part of the experience -- which this fall really was part of the journey. Plus, thank you for sharing about the seat rotation - this is important as sometimes guides think guests will do it on their own, especially when the coach is not full - and we need to have information to share with them that it is an expectation of the guests and us. So thank you for sharing and caring. Best wishes for a great winter!
