Itinerario

40 min

The most meaningful experience on the Gold Coast – every visitor and local should do this walk

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ On a beautiful sunny day, we joined a walk led by Tyreece, and I can honestly say it became one of those experiences I’ll never forget. Before I even mention the tour itself, I want to highlight the incredible warmth of everyone working at Jellurgal. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine smiles and kindness. The cultural centre is also filled with beautiful, thoughtful, high-quality handmade products, and what makes it even more meaningful is that these support Aboriginal communities rather than the centre itself. It is such an important and inspiring mission. As for the walk, there were so many unforgettable moments, but two stand out above all. The first was something deeply confronting. I’ve walked from Tallebudgera Creek to Burleigh Heads many times over the years. I’ve admired the scenery, taken photos, and thought I knew the place. I had even visited the centre once before, but unfortunately missed the guided walk. This time I finally understood what I had been walking through all those years. Listening to Tyreece explain how many sacred places have been built over, turned into shopping centres, tourist attractions or simply left unmarked so that people unknowingly walk across them every day was heartbreaking. Standing at Tallebudgera Creek, looking up at the giant’s hand, completely changed how I see this landscape. Those graffiti-covered rocks that visitors climb on were once a sacred birthing place where only women would go, giving birth while facing the ocean and spending precious time with their newborns before introducing them to the community. It was impossible not to feel the weight of that story. We were looking at a place that deserves understanding and respect, yet most people, including myself until today, simply never knew. I cannot imagine a more powerful example of how colonisation transformed land that belonged to the Kombumerri people into land that now seems to belong to everyone except those whose connection to it stretches back countless generations. A connection defined not by fences or signs, but by ceremony, respect, nature and relationships with neighbouring nations. The second unforgettable part was Tyreece’s storytelling of the Dreaming story of Jabreen. The image of the giant stepping from the Milky Way to create the rivers, mountains and valleys of the Gold Coast was captivating, but it was the deeper lessons that stayed with me. Jabreen could feel the warmth of the sun but couldn’t truly see because the clouds covered his eyes. Tyreece said something that I think I’ll remember for a very long time: nothing can truly be created while our vision is clouded. And despite Jabreen’s immense power, his greed for the wild honey stopped him from becoming truly divine. Even the greatest creator was still vulnerable to greed. It was such a beautiful and timeless lesson. Our tour ran well over time because we asked so many questions (and we were also translating parts into Hungarian for half of our group), but Tyreece never rushed us for a single moment. Instead, he generously gave us even more of his time, answered every question with patience and kindness, and made us feel that sharing his culture mattered more than keeping to the schedule. Thank you, Tyreece. Thank you, Jellurgal. This was so much more than a guided walk. It changed the way I will see this landscape forever.

Highlight of my trip to Gold Coast

I was lucky to have a one-on-one tour with Alya, a First Nations Ranger at the centre. I never would have guessed I was her very first tour client — her knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm were incredible. I learnt so much about culture, language, and the deep spiritual connection First Nations People have with the land. Her Dreamtime stories were captivating and unforgettable. The staff were also so warm and welcoming. A must-visit experience, and a special thank you to Alya!

Jingeri Helen 👋🏽 Thank you for your amazing 5 star review regarding your walkabout with ranger Aliya! She was so ecstatic once she returned and spoke about how lovely the whole experience was for her. Our guides thrive on being able to connect our guests to Yugambeh language stories and country so to hear this feedback is amazing. We hope to see you again at Jellurgal on your next visit 👣

Something a little different

Highly recommended to people who are interested in leaning aboriginal culture of nations living close to the Gold Coast. The dreams passed down generations by generations share the wisdom and knowledge from the ancient time to today. We also experienced the body painting culture on our arms, which patterns represent different meaning for different nations. If you are interested in something a little different, visit here!

Cultural Immersion

Yesterday I had the privilege of immersing myself in a couple of hours of Aboriginal culture and story telling during Jellurgal's Walkabout tour. Our guide, Kailen, was very knowledgeable and a wonderful storyteller who made us feel so welcome to explore culture and enjoy time on Country with him. From the moment you arrive at the cultural centre, the team make you feel so welcome and at home. I applaud them for creating such a beautiful and welcoming space. I will return for some more cultural immersion as soon as I am able. Until next time.

Exploring Aboriginal Culture Near Brisbane

Our cruise ship itinerary included a day in Brisbane and, since I had read about the Jellurgal Center, we decided to spend our day exploring Aboriginal Culture. We were extremely pleased with our decision. The team at the Center were very knowledgeable and did everything in their power to make our experience memorable. The walking tour afforded our guide the opportunity to share information about the creatures, plants and minerals that were significant to the local Aboriginal peoples and to share some of their fascinating Dream Time stories. The Center is very convenient to several beaches as well as numerous other Gold Coast attractions. While the Jellurgal Center is about an hour and 20 minutes’ drive from Brisbane, there are public transport options available.

A wonderful wander

Due to rainy weather conditions we weren't sure this tour would happen, but the staff kept in constant contact with us, and were able to make happen. The talk and walk were wonderful - informative and emotional. Particularly loved the stories of the Dreaming. Our guide, Tyreece, was warm, friendly, and a wealth of knowledge.
