Bucarest — una città un tempo conosciuta come “Piccola Parigi”, un luogo di eleganza e grandezza. Ma cosa sarebbe potuto diventare se non per la mano pesante del comunismo? In questo tour privato a piedi, sarai testimone di contrasti sorprendenti in prima persona. Dal centro storico splendidamente restaurato, con il suo fascino Belle Époque, alle strutture brulle e imponenti dell'ex Centro Civico Comunista, ogni passo rivela una città modellata da due epoche estremamente diverse. Più di un semplice viaggio visivo, questo tour svela la storia di 45 anni di dominio comunista, aiutandoti a vedere oltre il colorato presente di Bucarest. Iniziamo davanti all'Ateneo rumeno, simbolo della città prima che il comunismo prendesse piede. Qui, scoprirai come il regime è stato brutalmente imposto alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale: la presa di Stalin sull'Europa orientale, il terrore della polizia segreta del KGB, le deportazioni di massa in Siberia e la distruzione sistematica della stampa libera, della proprietà privata e della cultura stessa.
Qui a Piazza della Rivoluzione, il luogo in cui Nicolae Ceaușescu, l'ultimo dittatore d'Europa, tenne il suo discorso finale, entrerai nel cuore del turbolento passato della Romania. Questa piazza storica ha assistito agli echi della propaganda, alla morsa dell'oppressione e, in definitiva, al fragore della rivoluzione. In questa sosta, scoprirai come la Romania è stata rimodellata sotto l'occupazione sovietica, dall'ascesa del suo primo leader comunista ai primi anni del governo di Ceaușescu. Una volta salutato come un giovane leader promettente, strinse la presa sul potere, gettando le basi per un regime che sarebbe entrato a spirale nel controllo assoluto.
A Piazza dell'Università, il cuore della Rivoluzione del 1989, ti troverai dove la lotta della Romania per la libertà si è trasformata in violenta. Qui i manifestanti rischiavano tutto, dove i proiettili squarciavano la folla e dove il governo di Ceaușescu iniziava a crollare. Qui, esplorerai gli ultimi anni del suo regno, segnati da paranoia, politiche sconsiderate e difficoltà a livello nazionale. Ma la rivoluzione non è stata solo una rivolta spontanea. Mentre la gente combatteva per la libertà, erano in gioco forze nascoste. Era solo la volontà del popolo, o stava succedendo qualcos'altro nell'ombra?
La quarta fermata vi porta attraverso il centro storico restaurato, ora solo una frazione della sua dimensione precomunista. Tra eleganti palazzi del XIX secolo, chiese bizantine e caffè bohémien, aleggiano tracce di storia. Molti di questi gioielli architettonici sono stati ricostruiti o restaurati per ricucire i fori di proiettile e le cicatrici sociali che ancora rimangono, decenni dopo la caduta del comunismo.
L'ultima tappa ti porterà nel cuore dell'ex Centro Civico Comunista: Piazza della Costituzione, sede del colossale Palazzo del Parlamento, il secondo edificio più grande del mondo dopo il Pentagono. La sua storia oscura vi affascinerà, ma ancora niente spoiler. Sappiate solo questo: nasconde sette piani sotterranei, bunker atomici e una rete segreta di tunnel sotto di esso. Dopo aver ammirato l'imponente esterno del palazzo, la tua guida ti accompagnerà di nuovo nella Città Vecchia, dove il tour si conclude."

This used to be known as the Palace Square until they changed the name in 1989. Today it is surrounded by the National Museum of Art of Romania, the Athenaeum concert hall, the University of Bucharest library, and the Athénée Palace Hotel. There's a modern monument raised in its center that looks like a potato on a stick. This square is associated with the end of the communist regime in Romania. It's where the then Communist leader Ceauşescu delivered his final speech in December 1989 that caused a popular revolt leading to the end of the communist rule. So there's really much more to see in this place than meets the eye. Some knowledge about Romanian history helps you appreciate this square more.
We had a wonderful time with Mihai, learning about the history that shaped Bucharest and Romania. So much to learn, he has such a deep and insightful perspective. We highly recommend!

Mihai’s warm welcome really set the tone of the the day. He is extremely knowledgable and personable. You will get out of this tour as much or as little as you like and his real skill is tailoring the experience into what you want to get out of it as he has a natural ability to adapt to the audience. As a keen historian, this tour was absolutely perfect for me as he engaged in discussion and sharing opinions with me, as opposed to a pre made speech which other guides would give. He asks thought provoking questions and gives passionate and insightful views. The tour was relaxed and didn’t feel on a strict schedule or like he was clock watching. The private tour of communism was amazing. Our guide Andra met us at our hotel lobby so we did not have to locate a separate location. Andra was very informative and honest. She shared many first hand personal experiences from her family life. This approach made the experience come alive. She planned the walking tour in a very sequential manner helping us to understand how the rule of communism affected the population. At the conclusion of the tour she asked how she could help us. As a result she walked with us to our next location. We highly recommend this tour and Andra as a guide. Worth every penny. You won’t be disappointed.
