Meeting place as supplied by Viator was completely inaccurate. After contacting Viator and being able to actually chat to a human i discovered the meeting place was half a mile away. Our friendly guide (Ravi) was fantastic, knowledgeable and interesting, If not for him it would have been 1 star.
Did the Heritage and Food Tour last week while in Barbados. Description of the tour sounded much better than the actual tour experience. Our tour guide was not very knowledgeable and frequently told us that she was no expert. First stop was jammed into a small bar with inadequate seating, and local establishment was not prepared for us. Last food stop was an air conditioned place but also lacked adequate seating. We had to go find chairs when other guests were finishing. We were presented food that was described accurately as pork, sweet potato and bread fruit. Looked very unappealing and majority of guests never sampled it. After we were finished, tour guide then told us that the pork was snout, ear, tail and feet. Tour guide then stated when we were slaves the masters kept the best parts and gave us these scraps. Today we gave you what we made beautiful from these scraps. Would not recommend this tour.
Good day - we regret that you did not enjoy the tour. We are a heritage and food tour operator that aims to expose visitors and the curious to authentic Bajan cuisine so they can experience food like the locals. The small crowded rum shops visited on the tour are very much part of the experience, as is fare such as pudding and souse with its attendant history and story. Your feedback has prompted us to look into our tour description across sales channels. We will aim to tweak wherever we find that such description does not capture the heart and spirit of what's on offer. Thank you.
We were disappointed with the tour, as a whole. The tour started at an organic food stall in Jubilee Gardens. The tour guide did not know the names of many of the fruits and vegetables. The stall operator kept correcting her. After describing how delicious everything was; we left. I would have loved to sample them. We were near the back of the pack and couldn’t hear about 60% of what the guide said. What we did hear was not terribly insightful. I enjoyed going into the first rum house. I ate the fish sandwich, it was quite dry, however. The second stop was a doughy ball that apparently had fish in it. Unable to eat it. We continued along but being near the back of the pack we had no idea what was being said or pointed out. Finally gave up and left the tour early along with another two participants. Wouldn’t recommend this experience.
Good day - really sorry to hear you were disappointed with the experience. Appreciate your feedback and will do our best to improve volume and content of communication.
This tour was very disappointing. The first 2 food stops and the quality of the guide did not represent good value for money. It was unfortunate that our guide was more interesting in sharing details of her family, friends and personal life than she about informing us about the sights we were seeing. She was often distracted by what was going on around her and kept mentioning how tired she was having not slept the night before. All of this felt very unprofessional. Overall, we would not recommend this tour to others.
Had a really great time with Don, she took us around Bridgetown, to the places used by the locals, we tasted some great food, saw the sights, whilst Don educated us on history culture and food
I am very sorry that you had a disappointing experience and that you found our guide to be unduly distracted. We will work to ensure that does not happen again. Your feedback is noted and appreciated.
Had a wonderful stay at a VRBO, 6 weeks in a Villa with a private pool and situated on a cliff overlooking the ocean on the southeast side of the island. We were 15 minute drive east of the airport. One key word is expensive : food, golf, fuel. Despite these issues, climate was ideal, 30C during the day, 26 C at night. Despite the adjustment to driving on the left, Barbados has some of the worst roads I’ve ever driven on. Oistins fish fry on Friday evenings is a must see. We also had enjoyable trips to Brightons Farmer Market ( Saturday mornings…go early and enjoy breakfast and fresh produce shopping), Huntes Gardens, and you don’t want to miss Harrison’s Cave. The Four Square Rum factory tour and tasting is a must in Barbados. The hospitality and friendliness of the locals made us feel at home. You will especially notice this driving. Cost YouLess was our go to grocery place although they didn’t always have everything you might be looking for.
Kezia was an incredibly knowledgeable and personable guide! We had a wonderful time touring the historic areas of the city, learned a lot about its history and local culture, and enjoyed sampling local street foods.
Hi Kathy - We appreciate your review and are happy that you enjoyed the tour.
I'm not sure what I expected, but we enjoyed this unique, non-touristy sightseeing and food tasting walk through Bridgetown. Nicola is chatty and fun, and she can answer questions about anything! The "hole-in-the-wall" first stop was interesting, although I'm not sure I'm crazy about souse. The second stop was tasty, but in a generic air-conditioned restaurant. We all enjoyed the final stop with chicken necks, mavi and more that was new to us, at the oldest bar in the city. We enjoyed viewing the architecture, old synagogue and cemetery, Parliament buildings and more.
We truly appreciate your kind review.
Nicola was our guide and she was fantastic. Met us as scheduled and then we spent about four hours walking through Bridgetown, Barbados, stopping at four places to eat. Nicola discussed history, architecture and most importantly the food we were going to eat. There was a good variety of places we stopped as well as the types of foods we sampled. One of the best tours we have taken in the Caribbean. If you are in Barbados, definitely try them!
Hi Scott- pleased that you enjoyed our tour and deeply appreciate your review.
Nicola, our tour guide, was excellent!! I would highly recommend this food tour when you are in Barbados.
