Nelle prime ore del 22 gennaio 1944 un convoglio di 374 navi sbarcò la 1a Divisione britannica sulla costa che da Tor Caldara portava a Tor San Lorenzo appena a nord di Anzio, mentre la 3a Divisione americana sbarcò sulle spiagge tra Nettuno e Torre Astura, denominata Peter Beach e X Ray Beach dalle forze alleate. Il 22 gennaio 1944, alle 2 del mattino, la flotta del 6° Corpo d'armata alleato, agli ordini del generale John Porter Lucas, equipaggiata con 253 unità anfibie e 140 unità da guerra, iniziò lo sbarco sulla costa di Nettuno e di Anzio. Una massiccia operazione militare che si è rivelata molto più difficile del previsto. Lo sbarco di Anzio - Nettuno, noto anche come Operazione Shingle, è stato ricordato come una delle fasi più drammatiche della seconda guerra mondiale combattuta sul territorio italiano. L'idea era aggirare la linea difensiva tedesca Gustav - che bloccava l'avanzata poco più a sud, nei pressi di Cassino - e liberare Roma.
La battaglia di Anzio fu una battaglia della campagna italiana della seconda guerra mondiale che ebbe luogo dal 22 gennaio 1944 (a cominciare dallo sbarco anfibio alleato noto come Operazione Shingle)
Il sito del Cimitero e memoriale americano della Sicilia-Roma della Seconda Guerra Mondiale in Italia copre 77 acri, sorgendo in un dolce pendio da un'ampia piscina con un'isola e un cenotafio fiancheggiato da gruppi di cipressi italiani. Oltre la piscina c'è l'immenso campo di lapidi di 7.845 militari americani caduti in guerra, disposti in dolci archi su ampi prati verdi sotto i filari di pini romani. La maggior parte di questi individui morì nella liberazione della Sicilia (10 luglio-17 agosto 1943); negli sbarchi nel salernitano (9 settembre 1943) e nei pesanti combattimenti verso nord; nello sbarco di Anzio Beach e nell'ampliamento della testa di ponte (22 gennaio 1944-maggio 1944); e nel supporto aereo e navale nelle regioni.
Il cimitero di guerra di Beach Head (da non confondere con il cimitero di guerra di Anzio) si trova a 5 km a nord della città di Anzio ed è gestito dalla Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Ospita 2.316 soldati, marinai e aviatori della seconda guerra mondiale del Commonwealth. 1.917 tombe appartengono a soldati del Regno Unito. 68 canadesi formano il secondo gruppo più numeroso, seguiti da soldati sudafricani (25), australiani (6), indiani (5) e neozelandesi (4).

a fantastic experience, witnessing what my father went through at Pegasus Bridge, a lot of walking but had a very knowledgeable tour guide who was excellent
The Beachhead Museum in Anzio was a wonderful hidden gem, run by Patrizio Colantuono and created by donations from veterans who served in the battle(s) for Anzio and Nettuno. It was a fantastic spot and without our guide (Giovanni) we never would have found it so we are extremely thankful for his great work and help in translating as well!
I visited Anzio as my father participated in the battle includiing entering Rome in June. Visiting the museum was a highlight. I was unaware of its existence. Speaking with Francesco, our guide, and Patricio the President of the museum, whom so passionately want to preserve the story moved me.
Our guide was very sweet. I have no complaints about him or our driver. The tour was not what I expected. I would also not recommend taking anyone to a fish restaurant for a tour luncheon.

This tour was a Birthday gift to my husband who loves the history of WW2. Francisco was a wonderful guide, so full of knowledge of the war and wonderful personality. We had a wonderful full day and lovely lunch in Anzio. Our driver Paul was great as well. Sandy

Great experience seeing the cemeteries and landing zone, a great connection to my father in law who participated in the landing Paola and Francesco were great hosts and guides.
The American Cemetery and Memorial as as beautiffuly maintained as anywhere. Quiet, somber, and moving. Freedom has a price. These men paid it for us all.
Danila Bracaglia, our tour guide, is high knowledgeable, having extensively researched the battlegrounds of Anzio Beach and other Allied forces landing areas during World War II. She picked us up at the Nettuno station and we began our tour at the Sicily Rome American Cemetery, a very beautiful tribute to the nearly 8000 men and women who gave their lives during this war, many who have been identified and others who remain unknown. Another 3000+ who were missing in action are memorialized. The cemetery has a wonderful video and a photographic timeline. We drove to Anzio Beach and then to Nettuno where she highlighted various aspects of these towns and their importance during the war. We had lunch together in Aprilia where only a statue of the Angel Michael remains. She then took us to 'Piana delle Orme', that has an amazing collection of wartime vehicles, and numerous exhibits depicting the war in the locations around the world, all with original uniforms, artillery, and maps. Danila was a pleasure to be with and we also thank Gianni for driving us to the different towns. During our rides, we were able to watch several videos relating to the important battles that took place in these forgotten areas.
