In questo tour esplorerai tre delle basiliche più importanti del mondo, dopo San Pietro: San Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Maria Maggiore e San Paolo fuori le mura. Costruita nel IV secolo dall'imperatore Costantino, la Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano è la chiesa più antica del mondo occidentale. Ex sede del papato e attuale sede dell'arcidiocesi di Roma, San Giovanni Latera è il Duomo di Roma. I suoi numerosi tesori includono le porte originali della Curia romana o la casa del senato. Nelle vicinanze si trovano la Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs), ritenuta la vera scalinata su cui Chist fu processato davanti a Ponzio Pilato. Santa Maria Maggiore è una delle chiese più antiche dedicate a Maria, la Madre di Gesù, ed è conosciuta per i suoi mosaici con scene della vita di Maria. Ospita anche la reliquia della mangiatoia di Cristo. Ultimo ma non meno importante, la Basilica di San Paolo fuori le mura è la seconda più grande basilica dopo la Basilica di San Pietro. Fu fondata sul cimitero di San Paolo.

There is NOTHING like Saint Mary Major ranks up there with the Vatican. All 3 were great visits as this was our 4th time to Rome and wanted to see where the late Pope Francis is buried.

Built by Emperor Constatus the Great, it was consecrated in 324, is very beautiful and has one of the 4 Holy Doors that Rome has. Don’t miss out on your visit to the city.
TripAdvisor sent a message to me saying that I said something inappropriate and against the rules, but I don’t see it. Here’s my review containing just facts: “Around 313 AD, Constantine I, after marrying Fausta, donated the Domus Laterani to the Bishop of Rome. It is believed this donation occurred during the pontificate of Pope Miltiades This donation of the Domus Laterani paved the way for the construction of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, which stands on the site today. The basilica is considered the cathedral of Rome and the oldest public church in the Western world. “
We enjoy visiting all three of Papal Basilicas. We went late morning there was not a huge crowd. Seems that is the best time to visit all three Basilicas.

The basilicas are absolutely worth a visit, and our guide was able to explain and show us so much that it added to the experience. Our guide tailored the tour to us as we went. She was very knowledgeable and may the visits so much better than had we done it on our own.
