I have been many times over many years and always very pleased. Returned recently and was very disappointed. Walled kitchen garden was totally hopeless. It was brilliant when HDRA ran it. Facilities such as carparking & toilets were dreadful. A lot of historical inaccuracy in the presentation of gardens and house display. Restoration needed on temple bridge and at other points. Nursery exhibition very poor. However, it is a special place with lots of unique features and lots to see.
What a beautiful estate house and lovely lovely gardens. Definitely worth visiting if in that area. Loved the cafe , the stuff, the programs with horses for children.
It was admittedly a very hot day when we visited, but the car park was a fair walk from the property, down a hill which had to be climbed up again to leave. There is disabled parking which is nearer, but it was an uncomfortable walk and would be equally so in cold, wet weather. While we're on the negatives, I think the shop misses a trick, as the stock is fairly basic compared to a similarly-sized National Trust property, or an independent such as Chatsworth, for example. The admission fee is very high, comparable to Hampton Court and other nationally significant stately homes, so you would hope for a more impressive visitor experience. What was best about it was the talk by the volunteer guide about the history of the house, which filled us in on the past, even greater, grandeur of the house. We didn't get to see the secondhand bookshop as it was another longish walk in the heat .
