The first stop of the day trip is the stunning Basilica di San Francesco, which is the one of the sites noted by the World Heritage Committee, due to the fact that it represent an amalgamation of masterpieces stemming from creative human genius and it is an extraordinary example of an architectonic complex that has heavily influenced the development of art and architecture. The Basilica is formed of three churches one on top of the other: starting from the Crypt/Tomb Church, Lower Church and the Upper Church.
Another location that can’t be missed is the The Cathedral of San Rufino, the historic centre of Assisi. Its wonderful Romanesque façade rises majestically over San Rufino Square. The interior houses the baptismal font in which Saint Francis, Saint Clare and possibly the future Emperor Frederick II, the Duke of Swabia, were baptised.
Late morning, guests will reach the beautiful fortress stands on a hill that overlooks Assisi: The Rocca Maggiore. From the walls of the castle and the “Maschio” tower, guests can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the city and of the Umbrian valley. Moreover, the various halls inside the fortress within host reconstructed themes inspired by medieval life. In fact, in the ancient times, it was a sacred and essential to defend the town.
For lunch, guests will taste the delicious Umbrian flavors in a local restaurant. The Assisi cousin is basic and simple, with the local oil, golden and fruity, enriching every plate – without, meanwhile, robbing it of its original flavors. After lunch, guests will visit the amazing Church Santa Maria degli Angeli, which located at the feet of the hills of Assisi protecting the Porziuncola, the place where Saint Francis founded the first group of the Minor Friars Order, and the Chapel of the "Transito" where the saint died on October 3rd 1226.
