La storia del Taj Mahal è incentrata su una grande storia di amore e perdita: l'imperatore moghul Shah Jahan lo commissionò nel 1631 come magnifico mausoleo per la sua amata moglie, Mumtaz Mahal, che morì dando alla luce il loro quattordicesimo figlio. Costruito con marmo bianco e intarsiato con pietre preziose, il complesso impiegò circa 22 anni (completato ~ 1653) con 20.000 artigiani, diventando un apice dell'architettura Moghul e un sito patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO che simboleggia l'amore eterno. La storia del forte di Agra iniziò prima dei Moghul, ma fu l'imperatore Akbar a ricostruirlo come fortezza in arenaria rossa e capitale intorno al 1565-1573, trasformando un forte in mattoni (Badalgarh) in una grande città murata e centro militare. Successori come Jahangir e Shah Jahan aggiunsero squisiti palazzi in marmo bianco, moschee e sale (Diwan-i-Khas). Servì come residenza principale dei Moghul fino al 1638, fu testimone di battaglie e divenne famosa per essere stata la prigione di Shah Jahan, che guardò il Taj Mahal dal Musamman Burj fino alla sua morte, prima di cadere in seguito
