I took a four-night Nile cruise aboard the MS Mayfair in January 2026. The boat is lovely, one of the nicer ones on the Nile. Keep in mind that all Nile riverboats are officially rated by the government as 5-star, so that 5-star rating doesn't mean very much. Some of the so-called 5-star boats are old, decrepit, and terrible polluters. So when choosing a Nile riverboat, ignore the "5 star" ratings and select a boat with a good company and good reviews. The Mayfair company has three Nile riverboats (the flagship Mayfair, and the Esplanade and Mayflower). All are very nice. The finishes and decorative touches on the Mayfair are definitely of a higher quality than many of the Nile boats; it's a little pricier than some of the other boats, but that means it will most likely not be full, and you'll receive plenty of personal attention. Even at high season, my sailing was probably not quite at half capacity--very nice. The food and service are excellent! Much recommended.

Now that I've done this cruise twice I would gladly do it again enjoying the pampering of the crew, beautifully served meals, the swimming pool on the roof and by far most importantly the line up of spectacular shore excursions to places like Edfu, Esna, Kom Ombo, Dendera and of course the matchless sites in Aswan and Luxor. The Nile cruise experience is essential for anyone interested in deepening their knowledge of Western Civilization whose early roots are found in part in the African continent, outside of the Western world, some millennia before the Christian era even began. The guides leading our shore visits were very knowledgeable in mastering the content and in speaking English. We [ 75 and 82 years old] tolerated the very dry heat up to 110 degrees pretty well.
