This is a 2+ hour walking tour of historical areas of the city of York highlighting the fascinating history of the city and it's connection to the Vikings and the Romans. Our guide John was "absolutely beyond" a wealth of information and knowledge of the historical aspects of the city. John himself was a charming and engaging guide and took the time to answer all of our many questions. What a great tour. Highly recommended. Thank you John.
I booked the Roman Tour of York with John during a family trip for my father's 70th birthday. Roman history is something my father particularly loves, but everyone in our group was interested in the topic and had a little bit of prior knowledge. We were all extremely impressed by John's expertise, enthusiasm for the subject matter, and ability to present information in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. In addition to being highly knowledgeable, John is a fun and relaxed guide with a fantastic sense of humor. We enjoyed our time with him very much, and his tour was a highlight of our ten days in England! I hope to visit York again, and booking another tour with John will be at the top of my list of things to do. Highly recommended.
John gave a great tour and answered questions well. We particularly appreciated a context of whys and a range of possible explanations rather than just a parade of dates and names from a script.
thank you so much for the lovely review, and as we always say as it is a private tour so much depends on the interaction with our guests, so it was a pleasure to spend some time with such lovely friendly and articulate people!
Excellent tour by a very knowledgeable guide. Learned a lot about the early history of York. John did a great job
My husband and I had a private tour of York with John, who was a wonderful tour guide, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Focus was on the Roman history of York but we touched on later history as well. A perfect introduction to our trip to York and extremely reasonably priced for a private tour. I highly recommend!
Our Guide John was amazing so informative. The tour was personable and covered so many historical topics. We really enjoyed the tour
John, like all of our York tour guides, was excellent. He was knowledgeable, informative, enthusiastic, funny & indomitable (not letting a torrential downpour stop him). This was a Roman York tour and he showed us many sites that we never would’ve found ourselves in out of the way places. He structured the tour so that it ended right next to our hotel which was especially appreciated since we’d otherwise have to walk to it in the above mentioned downpour. Easily a 10 out of 10
Our guide Tom brought history to life with his well researched honest and entertaining stories associated with Leeds Castle and Canterbury Cathedral. He made everyone feel included and valued and ensured with his commentary as we walked that all would recognise landmarks and return to the bus. For others he waited and escorted them. But his story telling was second to none. I am a museum guide myself at home in New Zealand and Tom was a lesson in how to do it and how to truly enjoy it. A great day out.
John brought history alive. I knew just enough to be dangerous but he answered our questions making connections I hadn’t thought of before. He was extremely knowledgeable! His command of dates and historical figures was unmatched. He had such enthusiasm for the subject and he was able to transport us back in time by painting pictures with his words. I actually saw the Romans rounding the bend on the Ouse coming in to make fort at York. He was always willing to answer any question and brought the history to life flawlessly.
I was happy to have done this very small and personal tour on foot on my very first day in York, as the history imparted gave me a great starting point for my look at the city. The guide, John, was kind enough to wait on me as I was late due to difficulty in finding restroom facilities, and was very knowledgeable and interesting. This was a good experience, I recommend!
