The day starts with a boat trip to the Albanian side of Saranda, where you can take a tour of the island. From there you can take the bus to Butrint. The excavations are very well preserved, the explanations are mostly understandable, you really try very hard. There are a number of guides working with very good English and German skills. The end is a short meal in a restaurant (well, it's an upscale quick snack), all very good and very interesting. Until the return journey, there are 2 hours for strolling along the seafront and buying various souvenirs. A really rewarding day - highly recommended.
Mara was the best tour guide of our trip. She told us about the history, culture, engineering, and architecture of Butrint. We would highly recommend this tour
BEWARE: Worst guided tour and might even be a scam. We booked a guided tour of the Butrint Archaeological Park. The company communicate well, they are punctual but I’m afraid it ends there. We had young Arber as the guide. He scored an A+ in English, he boasts, but knows nothing about history, archaeology nor even has a scant interest in either. All he did was walk us around the site, which is well signposted anyway, offering no more information than pointing them out. “Here is the amphitheatre. It’s very old” When I pushed him for information he floundered, clearly knowing nothing. “The amphitheatre was all covered when it was built” was not even true. It was rushed as well, Arber’s boss phoned him several times to make sure we ended on time (we never insisted on a finish time) but it was clear at the end that they wanted to squeeze in another group. When the boss asked me what I thought I politely fed back that Arber needed to improve the tour information. “He’s our best guide” came the unapologetic response. I dread to think what his other guides are like. We’ve used lots of guided tours around the world and this so far wins hands down as the worst ever. I’m even dubious that they are an accredited company. We learnt from an excellent guide the following day that in Albania all guides are required by law to have their licence on display on lanyards. Neither Arber nor his boss wore them.
Hi, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on your recent tour to Butrint National Park. We deeply regret that your experience did not meet your expectations and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you encountered. Firstly, we would like to assure you that Joel Travel is a fully accredited company, and all our guides, including Arber, are certified professionals. It is a legal requirement in Albania for all guides to display their licenses, and we take this regulation very seriously. We will investigate why Arber and his supervisor did not have their licenses visible during your tour and ensure this does not happen again. We are proud of our guides and strive to provide enriching and informative experiences for all our guests. It is clear from your feedback that we fell short in this instance. We apologize for the lack of historical and archaeological knowledge displayed by Arber. We will ensure that he receives additional training to enhance his knowledge and guiding skills. Regarding the rushed nature of your tour, we apologize for any miscommunication and inconvenience caused by the phone calls. We aim to provide a relaxed and enjoyable experience without time constraints unless specified by our guests. We deeply value your feedback and are committed to making the necessary improvements to prevent such occurrences in the future. As a gesture of goodwill, we would like to offer you a complimentary tour with one of our senior guides on your next visit to Albania. Thank you once again for bringing these issues to our attention. We hope to have the opportunity to restore your faith in our services. Warm regards!
The best part of the tour was our guide, Kacie, who was on-time, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable about Butrint and also gave us good information about Albania in general and Sarande in particular.
We visited Saranda after many years of not going and the girls of the agency made our trip easy and very fun!! You must book
Sarandë, Albania Butrint National Park We visited this archeology gem on a gorgeous day. Can't decide which was more thrilling, the ruins or the nature surrounding them. I LOVED this excursion. Our guide was fabulous, enthusiastic and so knowledgeable. The park itself, stunning! Ruins from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, such history.
