De la mi-novembre au nouvel an, les plus belles places de Vienne se transforment en marchés de Noël magiques. Les bâtiments monumentaux généreusement illuminés situés le long du Ring créent une toile de fond fabuleuse et l'arôme des produits de boulangerie de Noël et du punch intense crée une atmosphère d'avant Noël. Casse-croûte de pâtisseries fourrées à la crème, de fruits confits, de châtaignes grillées et de Weihnachtspunsch (un «punch de Noël» épicé de vin, de brandy ou de schnaps sucré avec des jus de fruits chauds). Situé sur presque tous les coins de la ville, il y a une multitude de huttes de marché à parcourir avec le plus grand marqueur devant l'impressionnant hôtel de ville. L’Art Mart situé devant l’église Saint-Charles, illuminée de façon spectaculaire, regorge de cadeaux confectionnés, d’aliments traditionnels et d’un terrain de jeu pour les enfants.
La cathédrale Saint-Étienne est entourée d'un marché qui présente des choses typiquement viennoises comme des globes de neige. Les parfums de Noël sont tout autour.
Kohlmarkt et Graben font partie du «quartier d’or» de Vienne. Le café le plus célèbre de la ville, Julius Meinl, et le pâtissier le plus célèbre, Demel, se distinguent de tous les magasins de luxe.
La porte Saint-Michel est l’accès le plus impressionnant au palais de la Hofburg, centre du pouvoir depuis plus de sept cents ans.
Ici, l'emblématique «Speckstandl» se dégage: saucisses, jambons, lardons et bouchées copieuses, ainsi que tous les trésors d'un fumoir.
Le «vieux marché de Noël de Vienne» à Freyung est pour beaucoup le plus atmosphérique de la ville. Entourée des palais les plus impressionnants de la famille, la place a toujours le charme d’une vieille place du marché.
Ferstel Passage est une sorte de «biotope culinaire» proposant des jambons à la romaine, un bistro français méditerranéen, des chocolats confectionnés par des chocolatiers et les délices de l'un des meilleurs cafés de la ville, le «Café Central».
La visite se termine au plus spectaculaire marché de Noël de Vienne, qui couvre toute la région et se gare devant l’hôtel de ville illuminé. Brigitte was such a delight when touring us around the Christmas markets in Vienna. She was very knowledgeable and we appreciated her little tidbits of history throughout the night. She was very engaging and personable. Not many tour guides care to ask for the individual names of their clients, but Brigitte made sure that was the first thing she found out when she met us! She was very patient while we were walking and we aren’t used to walking in Vienna’s winter weather, so it was nice to feel like we weren’t being rushed around. Brigitte is aware that some of Vienna’s sights and happenings are being catered to the increased tourism in the city, so she made sure to show us and bring us to places that exhibited the authenticity of Viennese way of life. Before leaving us for the night, Brigitte made sure to give us specific directions for the quickest route back to our AirBnB where she met us. Would definitely recommend for future tours!!

Travelers should know that this tour is much better and deeper than a simple Christmas Market tour. Walter is a scholarly tour guide who took us to numerous Christmas Markets, big and small; public and remote; old and newer. He shared concepts about Paris architecture, politics, culture, international influences, food, city government and infrastructure. We loved every minute and will book again next year.
