It was an excellent experience and a great introduction to the city and culture of Santa Marta. The coffee and food were amazing.
My husband and I spent a day with our guide Martin doing the Cacao Indigenous Tour. Martin picked us up where we were staying and our first stop was the Cacao farm. He was super knowledgeable about the entire life cycle of cacao and walked us through the farm and processing area. During the tour he told us all about Tayrona history and culture and their relationship with cacao in the past and today. We tasted the fruit of the cacao, drying beans, and every chocolate they made - all amazing!! We bought one of each :) After that, Martin mentioned we could squeeze in a trip to Taironaka before going on our river trip if we wanted. We obviously said yes!! Again, his knowledge on Taironaka far surpassed our expectations and the walk was beautiful. After Taironaka we had a delicious lunch - seriously, probably the best meal we had around Santa Marta. I also have celiac disease, and Martin was super helpful with helping me communicate that to the kitchen in Spanish. Then, we walked to the Don Diego river which was incredible! We saw so many howler monkeys and beautiful birds. We ended up where the river met the ocean and hopped out to walk on the beach for a bit. He took us to a little lagoon where we were the only people, and we saw a caiman! Then we had some time to swim. On the way back, Martin made sure to get us as close to the monkeys as possible and we spent a lot of time hanging beneath them while they howled at dusk. It was incredible. At the ened of the day, Martin took us to where we'd be staying that night outside of Tayrona National Park. He gave us a lot of recommendations on what else to do in the area and some must-dos in the park itself. He's a wealth of information! He even generously took our chocolate with him for us to get later so it wouldn't melt during our time in the park. We highly recommend booking with Martin. He is one of our favorite people we met in Colombia and the tour alone was more than we could have imagined!
