Itinéraire
Nous nous retrouvons à l'extrémité ouest de la cathédrale Saint-Paul, près du grand escalier. Cette merveille a été construite par Sir Cristopher Wren après le grand incendie de 1666. L'incendie a détruit la majeure partie du Londres médiéval, mais de nombreux endroits ont survécu à proximité. Sir Christopher joue un rôle dans les autres bâtiments que nous verrons, nous devons donc en apprendre davantage sur lui et sur Londres avant 1666. Il se trouve à 18 minutes à pied de Saint-Barth.
En route pour le prieuré de St Bart, nous nous arrêterons au mémorial de William Wallace, le héros écossais qui a combattu pour l'indépendance de l'Écosse.
L'église Saint-Barthélemy-le-Grand est un joyau du XIIe siècle. Une grande partie a survécu non seulement au grand incendie de 1666, mais aussi à la Réforme, à la guerre civile et au Blitz de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. le côté est de l'église conserve de superbes arcs, colonnes et tombeaux. Il s'agit d'une église normande primitive et il sera utile de la comparer avec les autres églises que nous visiterons construites au cours des siècles médiévaux ultérieurs.
Nous discuterons des murs du Londres médiéval et nous arrêterons à Newgate l'un des anciens points d'entrée de Londres. Il a ensuite acquis une renommée en tant que prison. C'est là que l'Old Bailey (tribunal pénal de Londres) a été construit et encore utilisé.
Si vous avez vu ou lu le Da Vinci Code, vous connaissez les Templiers. Ces moines-chevaliers médiévaux constituaient une force croisée riche et mystérieuse. Ils possédaient une grande richesse et bâtirent cette église au XIIe siècle. Celui-ci a également survécu au Grand Incendie, mais les restaurateurs victoriens ont fait la plupart des dégâts ! Son incroyable plafond voûté en pierre a survécu au Blitz lorsque les bombes ont plu tout autour de lui. Il y a ici un excellent lien avec les pères fondateurs des États-Unis – il ne faut donc pas le manquer !

First of all, Dr Geoff knows his history! His tour was top notch and we really enjoyed all the sites and stories about medieval London…he speaks very articulately and intelligently without being academic or boring…in fact, he makes the history come alive and fascinating! He is easy going and friendly and we are very excited to book one of his longer trips next summer to learn more about medieval Britain…highly recommend Dr Geoff to show you the highlights of English history!

This walking tour through medieval London was a truly captivating journey into the city’s lesser-known history. Dr. Geoff is an excellent tour guide. He is an extremely learned man with expert knowledge on medieval Churches and British history. Dr. Geoff began the private tour at St. Paul's Cathedral and took us to St. Bartholomew the Great as well as Temple Church. The latter two Churches are hidden relics of the Middle Ages that still survive today. He answered all our questions eloquently while explaining the architectural research he completed at Oxford. I certainly recommend Dr. Geoff's tour to anyone who is interested in the rich history of England and its Churches.
