Visite à pied de l'histoire des Noirs à l'est d'Austin
Description
Cette visite à pied historique emmène les invités à travers les débuts de la communauté noire d'Austin jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Les invités découvriront le plan directeur de la ville d'Austin de 1928 et la création du « Negro District », centré autour de la 11e rue Est. Nous visiterons des sites et des institutions importants tout au long de notre voyage d'un mile. Les invités pourront également engager un dialogue sur la nature changeante d'East Austin et de la communauté noire de la ville. Une grande partie de cette expérience consiste à soutenir les entreprises locales appartenant à des Noirs dans le quartier.

Itinéraire
Notre guide vous attendra près des bancs du devant le bâtiment pour discuter de l'histoire et commencer la visite. Les invités découvriront l'histoire des Afro-Américains à East Austin et la création du « Negro District » en 1928 par la ville d'Austin. Nous discuterons de la formation historique du quartier et du mouvement des Afro-Américains de toute la région d'Austin vers East Austin. Ils verront la fresque murale du Centre culturel du patrimoine afro-américain dédiée aux Afro-Américains influents d'Austin. Les invités découvriront également la maison Dedrick-Hamilton, qui a été construite par d'anciens esclaves dans les années 1890. Les membres de la famille y vécurent continuellement jusqu'à la fin du XXe siècle.
Après être passés devant la Rhapsody Mural, les invités découvriront l'émergence de l'Historic Victory Grill pendant la période Jim Crow. Ils découvriront également le circuit Chittlin et l'histoire de la musique afro-américaine d'Austin.
Les invités visiteront l'église historique afro-américaine fondée en 1865 à la fin de la guerre civile. Le guide expliquera comment l'église a été fondée par Freedman. Les invités découvriront le rôle des institutions religieuses dans la communauté afro-américaine. La plus ancienne institution d'enseignement supérieur d'Austin, une HBCU Huston-Tillotson, a été fondée dans le sous-sol de cette église. Les invités verront également le marqueur « Lynchage dans le comté de Travis » qui se trouve sur la pelouse de Wesley. Ce marqueur important permet aux invités et au guide d'engager une conversation sur le lynchage à Austin et sur la manière dont les Afro-Américains ont résisté à une telle violence grâce au renforcement de la communauté et des institutions.
La visite se termine au George Washington Carver Center. Ici, les invités découvriront la pétition de la communauté noire d'Austin visant à déplacer physiquement la branche séparée de la bibliothèque publique vers le « district noir ». Le guide expliquera le raisonnement pour lequel les Afro-Américains ont renommé les institutions ségréguées en l'honneur de membres éminents de la communauté noire. Les invités découvriront également la fresque murale Voyage to Soulsville peinte par John Fisher. Cette fresque murale est importante pour la communauté noire d'Austin car elle a été achevée en 1986. John Fisher est originaire d'Austin et a été formé par l'artiste légendaire, le Dr John T. Biggers à la Texas Southern University. Le guide touristique interprétera la peinture murale et établira des liens directs avec d'autres aspects abordés lors de la visite.

The tour was really fun and informative.
The walking tour as opposed to to a bus tour gave you a more intimate experience of the black communities in Austin. There were so many beautiful and historical murals. We got lucky that one of the artist was retouching his mural and gave us an in depth view of the historical meanings in the mural. I would recommend this tour for everyone since the black Life in Austin, Texas, his minimum as compared to larger cities.
We thoroughly enjoyed our East Austin Black History with our guide Julia. We learned so much and enjoyed the walking tour, stories and music. Julia was so knowledgeable about the history of the area and so pleasant to be with. Highly recommend. We went to Austin just for this & would do it again.
Donovan did an amazing job! He was punctual, professional and very polite. He was very knowledgeable about the history of Texas and African American journey through the years. He answered our questions and listened very intently. We highly recommend this tour!
I had the privilege of taking a Black Austin tour with Julia as part of a small team retreat for work. She was knowledgeable, passionate, and very easy to spend time with. Julia did such a great job of leading an engaging tour that will stick with me for sure. In fact, after the work retreat, a friend came to join me for the weekend. As we walked around East Austin, I loved being able to share some history of the neighborhoods and point out interesting buildings and landmarks. Highly recommend!
We were the only 2 people on the tour that day, so we had a private tour. Donovan was our guide that day and he was very personable and knowledgeable. I liked that he made it interactive by asking us questions about people and events. I mentioned to him that a lot of what he said was not taught in school (and both my wife and I went to school in Texas), so I with more kids would be taught what we learned that day so that they could have a more complete view of history in Austin and the U.S.
On 12 Jan 2026, by taking the East Austin Black Walking Tours I learned so much about Austin Black history, its leaders, and they’re tremendous impact in shaping and supporting positive change for people of color in Austin, TX. This is a must tour if you want to increase your knowledge of American history and how we are where we are today. Julia, the tour guide was excellent!
Julia was very informative. She did this in a very warm down to earth manner. My questions were nicely responded to. I learned quite a bit and greatly enjoyed Julia's presentation.
