Our trip to Braga and Guinaraes was run by Wonder Tours and led by their outstanding guide, Gisela. This describes the second day of three consecutive excursions out of Porto, and, so as not to seem too biased, I must say that Gisela is among the best guides we have encountered as her detailed knowledge of each area visited, her never-failing good humor, and storytelling skills were always in evidence. I'd like to offer some specific advice on the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Monte. Although the pictures you see are magnificent, it is even more stunning in person. But those steps! The steps look daunting and yes, there are well over 500! But there are many stops on the way up (or down) featuring a total of 17 small chapels containing life-size dioramas (statues made of Baroque, terracotta, and granite) featuring scenes from the last days of Jesus. Take the steps, and take your time!
Our guide (David) took really good care of me and my parents. He booked us a restaurant in Braga which tasted amazing. We really enjoyed the trip even it was raining all day.
We had a fantastic day with Paulo. He was very knowledgeable about the sites on our tour. Paulo also made lunch reservations for us at an amazing restaurant away from the crowds. We all loved our meal. The tour continued with a stroll through downtown Braga…. Just beautiful. We enjoyed our time Paulo and you will too!
Excellent tours. David was a great guide. Both cities were beautiful and the Bom Jesus was amazing. Great pieces of cultural history and beauty. This was our last day in Portugal and we were very glad to spend it on this tour.
By far the best of these tours and well worth the price tag. Much better than the other cheaper 50 people tours that take you to the massive wine producers. This feels very authentic in comparison. Moreover the food was absolutely delicious. We had wood fire grilled steak. And we got to try a super delicious vintage ruby port wine. Out of this world!! Luiz was amazing as well. Well traveled, well read and the scottish/portoguese accent works well his favor. Highly recommend.
This was my #1 tour that I wanted to do, and the weather forecasted was all RAIN on the day we were supposed to go. So I messaged Wonders Tours to ask if I change it to the one day I had saved as an "open" day. Thank goodness they were kind enough to allow us to this, because this area deserves to be seen in the sunshine!! It is so beautiful and I highly recommend this tour. Please ask for Ricardo if he is available. He will take you to Portuguese local restaurants where the food is very authentic (not touristy) which is what true travelers are looking for....the real thing!! This trip does involve a good bit of walking so plan to do in on a day you aren't already sore from something else the day before. So maybe plan to do it after the Douro Valley wine tour, or after an open/slow day... so that you aren't too tired to enjoy the dom Jesus stairs, castle and city walking!!
It was a very memorable trip. Made so many memories thanks to Maria. She is a fantastic tour guide. Thank you so much Maria. Hope to see you in India.
We visit theseUnesco heritage cities. We went on a private tour because we didn't like the hassle of big tours. We lived our guide and everything went according to plan. I recommend it.
