He is the kind of person who can happily spend hours discussing the history of an empire and then become equally enthusiastic about finding the right little place for a glass of tea or something delicious to eat. His curiosity also extends far beyond Istanbul and Türkiye. He has spent time in Albania and Serbia, experiences that have contributed to his interest in the Balkans, different cultures, shared histories, and the fascinating connections between the peoples of this region. When the conversation moves away from history and travel, there is a good chance music or literature will eventually appear. Savas is a Pink Floyd fan, and one of the books he particularly appreciates is George Orwell’s 1984. So, as your husband discovered when he said, “I could listen to him for hours!”, there are certainly plenty of subjects to keep a conversation with Savas going long after the historical explanations are finished! There is also another interesting chapter from his younger years. Savas completed his military service in Ankara as an infantryman, where he served as an aide to his regimental commander. Perhaps a little of the organization, situational awareness, patience, and ability to keep a complicated day running smoothly comes from that period of his life as well! But what makes us happiest about your review is not simply that Savas was knowledgeable. Knowledge is obviously important for a professional guide, particularly in a city with as much history as Istanbul, but we believe the way that knowledge is shared matters just as much. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Taksim, and Istanbul’s other historic areas can already be impressive when experienced independently. But behind every dome, column, street, courtyard, and neighborhood are centuries of stories. Byzantine Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire, religion, architecture, trade, politics, migration, traditions, and modern Turkish life all overlap here. A great guide can help connect those layers so that visitors are not simply looking at beautiful buildings but understanding why they are there and what they have meant to generations of people. We are so pleased that Savas was able to provide that context in a way that made the city come alive for your family. At the same time, we completely agree with you that some of the most memorable experiences are often the ones that were never written in the itinerary.
